With all the summer events going on in my life like, Golf, yard work, family & friends cookouts, and vacations, I have to take a brake from MRRing, from the end of March to about September.
That time is quickly approaching ,and my model railroading juices are really starting to flow. What is your model railroad season? Are you a season modeler, or do you model year-round?
I model or railfan 365 days a year and from late April to September I find time to fish and cookout since neither is all that time consuming. I set 2 hours a day aside(9-11 pm) to play video games.
As they do on the real railroads, 365 days a year 24 hours and 7 Days a week. here lately though it’s been sidelined, I have some important things to do.
My MRR season is when the kids are in school. I am retired and should be seeing the world, however with an 11 and 14 year that is hard to do. The wife insist on sending them to a hoity toity private school. Their days are 1 hour longer than the public schools and they get an extra week at Christmas and Spring break. Their Summer is also 2 or 3 weeks longer than the public schools. We use these weeks for travel, as the popular places are quiet as the masses have already returned to school.
When they are in school I am sure glad I have this hobby to keep me busy. But when they are off we hit the road and being retired I don’t need to worry about when we come home.
My narrow gauge layout is a ceiling mounted shelf type layout in my finished upstairs attic. As such, it is rather warm up there this time of year and though there is a window mounted air conditioner, summer is an off season for major work or operations. Oddly, I was working and running trains just last night about midnight… Had to get my train fix.
I really come alive more in the fall to winter season. Spring time is another matter. I want out of the house in good weather to do a bit of shooting. So, I would say Fall/Winter is my major train season time.
I would hazard a guess that most MR’s that do have a “season”, are colder weather MR’s, unless they are the opposite of me and have their road located in an unheated shed or outbuilding.
And WHAT may I ask is more important than the RR? Oh, wait a second… yes dear, I’m coming right now. Never mind about the question. I just got the answer.
Year round, in fact I do a lot of modeling in the summer, I dislike the hot, humid weather here in the Mid Atlantic - the train room and the work shop have conditioned air!
I was just thinking about this today as its August and cant believe how fast the summer has went by. I usually get back to the railroad right around now ( mid August ) by cleaning track and going over locomotives. I spent the summer on my mountain bike and getting on it while I can before the cold sets back in here and then the snow. While I still have lots of bike time I will start doing some small railroad projects here and there while planning out the bigger ones for fall and winter.
Train room is far too hot in the summer time, besides we have many summer visitors and tourists, and so I need to be down in the wine cellar selling the whine.
Living here in the Chicago area and like you, Sam, being an avid golfer, from April through November, I spend as much time as I can at the golf course.
From December through February, it is all about trains.
I spend some time, but very little, hanging around the layout during the Summer. March and November are iffy, depending upon the weather.
