What model IC diesel engine would have pulled "The City of New Orleans" train?

I would like to model this train , but I don’t know which engine is correct.

Depending on the time period involved, I believe an E-8 would be the most appropriate.

Get the Proto 2000 E8/9 A-B set. The E8/9 set is in the IC orange and brown which is correct for the earlier years before Amtrak took over. I hope this helps. When you get it modeled please post pics. Im in no hurry. I just havent seen a model of a full IC passenger train.

Oh yeah, Thanks for choosing to model IC.

Originally, it was pulled by E6s. Later, the IC bought E7s for the CoNO. By the late 1960s, the train could be seen with just about any of the IC’s E-unit fleet, which included E6, E7, E8 and E9 units.

Since the engines wore at least three different paint schemes, you’ll have to pick a time period to model the “train”.

From the book: America’s Railroads, the 2nd Generation
(by famous railroad author Don Ball)

On page 155, there are two beautiful color photos of IC passenger trains in 1964.

The first one is the “Land O’ Corn” with E8 4024 in the lead with an E7 behind it. The train is crossing a bridge. The caption states that the speed limit is 80 but hints that this train will be hitting 100 mph speeds. Wow! E-units were railroad “hot rods”.

The 2nd photo is the westbound counterpart nearing Rockford, Illinois. The lead locomotive is E8 4003 with an E7, also behind it.

That is a gorgeous paint scheme. What’s interesting is that behind the locomotive are what appear to be “Roadrailer” type trailers painted to match. I guess this was some type of express handling or package service.

It amazes me that this is just 7 years before Amtrak, during the era of waning passenger service from the railroads. These two trains look clean and sharp. Good to see that IC employees had some positive job pride.

Absolutley correct. here’s the links
