IMO scale and know of the mth mta subway cars and the few that lionel have but the expense is out of reach right now for me. With that being I was playing with the idea of doing an ho or n scale layout and being from the bronx I would love to model the nyc subway system. I have yet to find any ho or n scale subway trains. Does anyone know of a company making ho or n mass transit subways trains. A link or any info would be apreciated. Thank you
Stevin
Walthers/Proto 1000/LifeLike made several different models of subway train. They are currently listed as “Sold Out” on the Walthers site. Trainworld now is selling them (http://www.trainworld.com/, search for “proto subway” to find them) at full MSRP, unusual for Trainworld. My guess is, this is the end of the line for these, so you might want to act sooner rather than later.
I have 2 sets of these myself, and I’ve been very happy with them. They don’t come with DCC, but it’s pretty easy to wire in a decoder.
BroadwayLion has posted a video of his layout-in-progress, based on the NYC system. His trains are the Proto models, in several of the available color schemes.

This is a shot of my “Redbirds” in the station. The end gates and door chains were added on. The newer generation of Proto trains, the green cars, come with the end gates built in.

It’s always good to see someone else who wants to model subways. It’s an interesting side branch of the hobby, with a lot of possibilities.
That is a great shot of your redbirds. Funny thing is the 6 line is the line I grew up on and is the same trains I will probably start with. I would like to get a hold of the silver ones also, but mostly would like to model the 6, 2 , 4 and 5 line, mostly bronx, manhatten to brooklyn. I would love to see more photos of your layout if you have. Thanks for the info.
Not a single model of any IND/BMT cars. What they really need is cars that open the doors when they stop at a station to let the moose on and off.
there were some nyc subway cars in n scale in three car sets. they were not powered though but you could get one that was powered. the only place that i saw them was at the red caboose on 45th st in ny. if you get some old mr mags from about 10 years ago you will see in his ad’s (when he ran them) that he had them for sale. i don’t remember what division they represented though. in ho there were several runs of the lifelike subway cars and they each had a different paint scheme from the worlds fair colors as delivered in 1964 used on the flushing line to the redbirds. there were some cars on the irt that were painted black but i don’t remember green as on the latest release. i used to take the #6 irt line to pelham bay park and go to orchard beach or city island as a kid with my friends. (kids could do that safely then). i also worked there as a signal maintainer for 31 years and did a lot of signal and switch work on the pelham line.
