What new N Scale passenger sets would you want from Kato?

The latest,''The Daylight ‘’ seems to be a big hit.Nice looking cars and the GS-4 is a puller, easily pulling all 18 available cars.

I would like to see a new set of the Milwaukee Road’s famous ‘‘Hiawatha’’. Like the Walthers HO set.

I just got a California Zephyr set and still need to aquire the power, I’m going with an A-B-B-A Western Pacific.

I have always run Modern freight on my N scale layout but lately I have had a soft spot for the passenger trains from the mid 30’s thru the early 70’s.

Since Walthers seems to be working on Western trains, maybe Kato could look East and South:

NYC 20th Century Limited (1938 !), PRR Broadway Limited, SOU Southern Crescent, ACL Silver Meteor, IC City of New Orleans, L&N Hummingbird, EL Phoebe Snow, RDG Crusader.

I can afford to scatter my thoughts all over the map; I model in HO scale. But someday I may have to move into an apartment; then I will look at N more seriously. Meanwhile, feel free to kick these ideas around some.

I’d like to see them do a set of B&O cars in the classic Royal Blue scheme. These were old heavyweight cars that the B&O “streamlined” in their own shops at Mount Royal. Dozens of these cars still exist, many in their original paint because Amtrak didn’t want them.

Here’s the set at the B&O Museum in Baltimore.

How about something done up for the Chicago and Great Undec Railroad; anything which doesn’t require stripping down to bare plastic is a step in a positive direction!

I want a GS-4 painted BN with a hockey puck tender to head up BN hockey puck cars.

A CNW 400 would also be nice.

A set of cars for the pre-war Fuji or Tsubame trains would be nice. Even nicer if the Tsubame set included the water tank car.

Mark.

I vote for either the MOPAC Colorado Eagle, The Wabash Bluebird or my favorite of all, Illinois Central City of New Orleans.

I’ll second the B&Os, and add Wabash lightweights with a corresponding set of F-units, and a N&W J class with appropriate passenger cars.

The Wabash Bluebird should not be too hard. The dome coaches are already done. The Dome observation would need to be done as would the baggage lounge. A coach or diner would be good to go between the domes. Kato has tried the Wabash before but I don’t know what kind of sales results they got, particularly since the observation car was wrong. I believe they also did a set that had some of the Union Pacific look alikes.

I would be happy if they released the domes individually. I haven’t been able to catch one yet.[V] As it is I’m doing the Cannonball by repainting and re-decaling Rivarossi heavyweights.

The Rock Island-Southern Pacific Golden State should be possible as Kato has already done E-8 diesels and most of the cars…RI baggage, RI diner, RI/SP 6-6-4 sleepers, SP 10-6 sleepers, SP coaches , and Atlas-Rivarossi does the baggage/dorm (820) and observation (Golden Vista/Golden Divan). Kato with a slight modification could do (with new sides, with fluting, and one more window) RI coaches 339-349. Granted Kato’s diner would better fit the Rocky Mtn. Rocket as it is a match for Centennial II, but that’s a whole 'nother story.

Since I suggested Kato RI E-8s they shold be solid maroon or maroon with yellow wings so as not to step on Life Like’s E-7 and E-8 as built schemes.

Thanks for your time,

My Fine Arts department chair–my immediate boss where I teach high school–is into N scale and acquired the California Zephyr when it first came out. Though I’m in HO, I was drooling when he brought it by my office and we set it up on my desk and ran it behind his Kato WP A-B-B F-3 diesels. Wowser! of course, when BLI brought out their HO Zephyr set, I took out a second mortgage on the house to get it, LOL! The other day, I was in my LHS and saw the new Kato N-scale “Daylight” complete with one of the most beautiful GS-4 4-8-4’s I’ve ever seen in ANY scale, so I phoned Dave and said, “Guess what, get your rear end down here.” Now he has an absolutely gorgeous “Daylight” with the add-on cars and I don’t. Kato came out like gangbusters for you lucky N-scalers, and we HO people are still waiting to see if BLI or Genesis are ever going to release THEIRS!

Okay, friends, end of rant. Frankly, what I’d like to see in BOTH N and HO would be Milwaukee’s “Olympian Hiawatha” complete with those wierdly handsome Bi-polar electrics, and a really spiffy 1937 “City of San Francisco” pulled by a bubble-nosed EMD-2 A-B-B set. That would make me really happy and frankly, not so jealous, LOL!

I went down to my LHS and was looking at the ‘‘Daylight’’ again, and I decided I want it.

It will be the only steam I own , but my layout is all scenery with no towns or industry so all I have to do is take all my modern equipment off and just run that only.

I was thinking about a movie that had a passenger train in it that was from the fifties, but don’t remember what it was. The movie was ‘‘North by Northwest’’ with Cary Grant. Does anyone know the train?

That was the New York Central’s 20th Century Limited. It made the Broadway look like a Greyhound bus…

Any pics?

Google 20th Century Limited and check the images selection…
