What plans do you have for the train room this summer?

THis summer i have the hindsite of having gone thru last summers scoarcher. This summer will see a Airconditioner installed. A door at the top of the stairs, new rear door, and a new dryer vent.
My house is old, the foundation is from around 1800 so it is pretty cool down there. However during the last summers heat wave, it was even uncomfortable down there. A nice, small airconditioner, coupled with a door at the top of the steps should solve that. Also i needed to reroute the dryer vent.
This should really make my train room the place to be this summer. Hopefully i can keep up the train work thru the summer.
SO what is up with your improvements this summer?
Bill

Hi Bill

Hopefully if no major problems show up, which that is subject to change at anytime!
I would like to add a small room and a deck with a roof over it off of the train room. Then I can move the TV and some other stuff out and add that extention down the long wall.
Luckly for me the wife wants to do this project too! Now all I need to do is come up with
my half of the money.[swg]

With my train room in a separate building heating and AC are a deffinte need. I solved this problem by using a hotel style through the wall heat pump. I keep the unit set at it’s lowest heat setting during the winter to prevent freeze/thaw cycles and at about 80 during the summer when Im not in the room. I also have a dehumidifier that the wife picked up at a garage sale.

With this HVAC setup my trainroom is great for year round use.

I’ll continue construction of the layout over the summer - my layout is in an air conditioned spare bedroom.

Started yesterday doing some “constructive” destruction on a wall in my finished basement. This will allow me to move the computer desk, giving me the alloted (wife) space for layout expansion.

Take it off! Enjoy your family. Then you get real hungry in that 1st cool autumn day to do the changes or work you THOUGHT about all summer. Everything needs a break, even the choo-choos.

I run trains all year. During the summer, I paint figures, work on building kits and experiement with scratch building ideas, all done on my screened porch with a cold beverage within reach and good tunes on the stereo. Good stuff! This summer I’ll be converting two locos to TMCC using TAS’s kits. Layout work is reserved for the cold months.

No plans. I’l just setup a fastrac layout on the porch and have a ball.

GO Timberwolves!

I’ll be building the entire layout starting with the modification of existing benchwork.

I finally got started on building that mountain I’ve been talking about for the last five years!

It’s been kind of like Les Nessman’s office on WKRP. I’d point to the plastic tunnel portals just sitting there on the bare benchwork, and say: “and over here is where my mountain will be someday…”

Now I’ve got a glued-up pile of pink insulation boards, and I’ve bogged down in testing to make sure that my biggest engines and cars will make it through without whacking things. I think I can get past that this weekend, and start the actual shapping of the mountain.

Construction; of course!

I could never do like some toy train enthusiasts, and only do Christmas layouts once a year. Glad to see there are summer toy train fans here. IMO toy trains are meant to be run year-round!.

I’ll probably be working on some old steamers, and accesories I got, still not enough room for a layout. I guess until then I’ll be doing repairs.

redistricting, rezoning, rebuilding…

  1. need to move all the errant stuff out of train space in basement.
  2. need to paint, prepare, and add power to train space.
  3. need to take apart old train table at grandfather’s house and transport it here.
  4. need to build a choo-choo train table out of mostly used lumber and track
  5. need to drive the choo-choos around and aroud the tracks!!!

as you might notice, i have a hard time seperating my wants form my needs[;)]

Maybe I will build my layout this summer in the basement.

Nothing yet, may be starting the base construction of the layout, but since we have to enjoy nice weather before it starts to rain again, I’ll probably mostly be outside this summer. When it raines my non AC trainattic will be my territory.

Personally I dislike the sun and hot weather. I must be getting old because I dislike cold weather too, something about heating and snow plowing bills. Here in Minnesota there are only a few days in between.[;)]

My basement is always cool and comfortable. So, unless the lawn needs mowing, I will be inside doing something train related.[swg]

I guess I’m with Big Boy, as older age, comes less need to be outside in 85 deg and above temperatures and having central air, its better to be with the trains. I am planning on finishing my Circus Layout. Basically the tent.
