What Scale is Bachmann?

I have a Bachmann porter, shay and two Big Haulers ( one anniversary edition)
What Scale are they? I know this has been mentioned before but I just can’t find the information.

bachmann big haulers , g-scale I had three of them, bachmann also had a 040 porter g-scale, if you run out side , make sure you use brass track or stainless steel track, bachmann track is no good for out side it will rust. BEN

Bob,

The Big Hauler and Annie are probably pretty close to 1:20.3 scale. I believe the Shay and Porter are as well. However, the cars, both freight and passenger, are closer to 1:22 scale. But since prototype narrow gauge equipment was all over the lot regarding width, length, height, etc, the mismatch between the B"mann scales is probably within reason.

I always figured the Annie and Big Hauler for closer to 1:22.5. The Spectrum series is supposed to be 1:20.3.

For those coaches…
They are 18 3/4" long. This scales out to 35’ in 1:22, about 32’ in 1:20, and about 38’ in 1/24. A typical narrow gauge coach of that era is 38’ or 40’.

The 1/24 people I put in there barely fit.

Jout,

You’re probably right about the Big Hauler and Annie. I just enlarged the cab for an Annie to about the same size as a Connie (which is 1:20.3 and BIG) the Annie now looks much better and in scale with 1:20.3 stuff.

Walt

Walt,
Do you have a picture? I keep thinking of doing that to my Annie. I’m building a fleet of 50’ 1:20 passenger cars and I’d love to find a larger locomotive!

It is 1:20.3

Matt

Ahhh, the scale issue again! It was overdue!!!

The 4-6-0 (aka “Annie,” “Big Hauler”) is 1:22.5, as is all of their rolling stock.

Their Spectrum series locos (4-4-0, 2-6-0 Centennial, 2-8-0, Shay, Climax, Heisler) are 1:20.3

Their industrial mogul and 0-4-0 Porter are also Spectrum engines and listed as 1:20.3, but the scale is a bit indeterminant. They are based on their earlier 1:22.5 offerings. The industrial mogul is decidedly undersized for 1:20.3 as it’s built. Porter 0-4-0s came in a variety of sizes, so it’s probably real close to a prototype loco in either scale.

Now, that’s just the scale they’re built to. What scale you ultimately make them is up to you. A larger cab on the Annie and industrial mogul make them very nice looking 1:20.3 locos. There are commercial kits for replacement cabs for both locos.

K

Kevin,
I’m not sure that the cab kit for the Annie is 1:20. I forget who makes it, but I sent them a note and they said it was just a same size replacement.

Do you know of someone that makes one large enough to be 1:20?

Banta Works models I beleive makes wood cab kits for the Big Hauler , 1/22.5 scale and a new product a 1/20.3 cab for the 2-6-0 Indy

Ah. That’s the one. Now, if only someone would make a 1:20 cab for the Annie…

Me, Hopefully next week!
