What size of replacement wheels for Athearn BB 50 ft boxcars?

I have purchased a large job-lot of unbuilt Athearn Blue Box 50ft boxcars. I’m looking to replace the wheels with better code 70 compatible types (probably Proto 2000 ones), but which size should I be buying - 33" or 36" wheels?

Can anyone give me a pointer on what the best brand/size of replacement wheels would be? Also, any pointers on ways to lower these cars to a more prototypical ride height?

Rule of thumb. Your typical steam era 1960s to 1970s boxcar, gondola, flat car, reefer, stock car, caboose, tank car etc., etc., all used 33 inch wheels. Passenger cars use 36 inch wheels.

33 inch for your boxcar and most rolling stock. I use Proto 2000 and am happy with them.

I use Walthers Proto 2000 series 33 inch wheels with all my freight cars that I put metal wheels on. Item # 920-21258.

As others have said, you’ll want 33" wheels for your boxcar. AND…depending on your era, you have a choice of “ribbed” or “flat-back” wheels. Unless you’re modeling cars from the 30s, flat-back wheels is what you want.

Same here. 33" inch wheels and I also use Proto 2000 wheel sets.

Sorry, can’t help on the ride height issue!
