It’s 1:40 pm eastern daylight savings time here as I peruse the forum. But I see numerous posts stating they have been posted today with times such as 6:30 pm. Are we on International time or what?
I just want to be sure I am in sync with everyone else.
I think its based on the time zone you put in you profile as to what displays on your screen.
Its just after 10pm here in the UK - but I bet my post doesn’t display that to you, it will tell you I posted (lets do some math here) about 4pm your time.
Right now it is approaching 5:00 A.M. in beautiful downtown Greenwich which gives its name to Greenwich Mean Time which is the time posted on the forum - I guess. If it’s not Greenwich Mean Time - abbreviated GMT - then it must be:
I think you are right, but I also think there is a quirk in the programming. I live in GMT +7 zone. You live in GMT +1 in summer time. So it is 13:30 as I write, but in the UK it is 07:30.
Take a look on your screen to read what time I posted this by your reckoning. I am guessing that it might be 07:30 or thereabouts whereas my screen shows 14:30 because some turkey has neglected to account for summer time. (actually 14:44 because it took me too long to nut it out.)
You wrote that it was just after 10PM (22:00) and estimated that someone in the eastern part of the US would see that as 4PM (16:00). I think you might be an hour out in your calculations. Eastern US is GMT -4 zone in summer. They are five hours different to you, so I would suggest 17:00 when you had 22:00.
All too confusing. I should be able to work this stuff out from my previous profession as a navigator, but we always used GMT (now UTC) to avoid the confusion. Hope I have not made an error in the calculations above.[:I]
If you want to calculate the adjust time facility on your computer (if you use Windows) is a handy tool. Check the box for daylight saving.
This is just so bad. I should not be wasting time on trivia, but it has me exercising my brain for a change!!
The time that shows should be your local time adjusted from the system time using the time zone set in your profile. For example mine is set on GMT +7.
Now “wshelhorse” wrote that it is 1:40 pm Eastern Daylight Time. His post shows on my screen as being made at 1:48AM today. That is not in error by far. Just one hour.
The system considers him to be in the GMT -5 Zone. So it sees his post time as 18:48 GMT. I am in GMT +7, so on my screen it flicks up 01:48 (am). What the system is not picking up is that the eastern sea board, and many other places in the northern hemisphere are on daylight saving time.
In reality it was 17:48 GMT when he posted, and so 00:48 by my time.
That is one error.
Now “I see numerous posts stating that they have been posted today with times such as 6:30 pm”, I really do not know why.
Second error, and I have not experienced that one.
Further example of first error.
Our colleauge “rtpoteet” who lives in the GMT -8 zone wrote that he posted at 9:52 pm. OK, that is 05:52 (next day) by our distorted system’s reckoning of GMT. So on my screen it shows as 12:52 pm. Should have been 11:52.
What has all that got to do with model railways? Not a lot, so I should not be wasting my time and your time. Sorry.[B)]
