What train did i see in American hot rods?

Hi guys,

I need your help since I’m clueless about this. I don’t know anything about modern trains so I need you to identify something. Since I do not have a picture I hope I can describe it.

First of, the train was mooned by Roy and friends in the show American Hot rods.

The show is in southern california.

The passenger cars where bi-level.

They where painted in some form of black.

They where pulled by a matching engine that was about as high as the cars.

Do anyone know what it could have been at what models would fit it?

Magnus

Perhaps something like this? http://rides.webshots.com/photo/1391181075055291935RhfVdK

Well, what you describe, the last time we discussed this (which involved making models of the ‘active’ participants in the scene), the thread got locked and ‘disappeared’.

To prevent that from happening again (at least until you get the info), I won’t provide a link, but suggest you enter ‘moon’ and ‘Amtrak’ in google, and look for a .org website in the results (should be near the top).

Who would have guessed that so many people even know what i was talking about.

Andre, that is the train, but I remember it as more black. Anyways, are there any HO models to replica this train? I don’t want to do the moon scene, I just want a modern Amtrak train and this is beautifull. The engine need to be DCC or being able to be DCC by just an easy plug in.

It will mostly be on display but I want to be able to run it.

Thanks guys,

Magnus

Actually, this http://railroadpictures.net/Trains/Amtrak/Amtrak_California/IMG_9079.jpg.html is probably closer to what you saw since the blue is much darker and looks almost black under certain conditions. The locomotive is available from Athearn http://www.athearn.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=ATH2629 , but the cars have only been available in brass. I vaguely remember that Athearn was thinking about doing them, but I could be wrong.

Here’s the page showing all the paint schemes available for the FP59HI. http://www.athearn.com/Search/Default.aspx?SearchTerm=F59PHI+RTR&CatID=THLD

Union Station Products makes kits for the cars apparently, here’s a link to one: http://unionstationproducts.com/_8000_3.html

My stepson and his wife live only a mile or so from the line traversed by the “Capitols” between San Jose and Sacramento. I’ll see if I can get some pictures for you the next time we visit.

Andre

Your talking about the annual “Moon” Amtrak event is California.

Out of fear that I’ll get booted, I won’t go into further details.
I’m not a real favorite around these parts to begin with.

Google is your friend!

OK, now I got it.

Lillen, the train(s) in question are the Amtrak Surfliners, not the Capitols. This picture makes the blue look very dark: http://www.trainweb.com/routes/route_ps/

That’s probably what made you think there was some black involved. If you get the Athearn FP59HI, you’ll want it in the Surfliner scheme.

There is an annual event in Southern California wherein the participants flash their gluteals at the trains. There’s even a website for it, although I’m not posting a link for fear of having the post or entire thread deleted. If you can make it to Laguna Niguel on July 12, you can participate in the festivities.

Here are some more Surfliner photos: http://www.trainweb.com/cgi-bin/photos/showmvc4.cgi?mvc/year2000/05/2000e23p/

It appears that the Surfliner cars are built to the same plans as the cars used on the Capitols up in this area.

Andre

Hi everyone, thanks a lot for the help. Which one of the Athearn engines would that be?

So there is no passnger cars available that match, that was a shame. It is such a nice setup. Do anyone know if anything else would come close?

Magnus

Not true is you know how to paint things. Wlathers, and Kato make the HO commuter coaches.

http://walthers.com/exec/productinfo/932-5971

and you may need a few of these http://walthers.com/exec/search?manu=WALTHERS&item=&split=30&category=Passenger&scale=H&instock=Q&keywords=Superliner&start=30

When it says : “Equipped with Quick Plug DCC technology” on the Athearn website does that mean that they are uppgraded with a 8 pin decoder or what?

I so wish there was a standard way of expressing this.

They’re not the same cars.

Andre

Yes there are. You can use the cars I indicated from Union Station Products in an earler post.

Andre

Are those painted in the correct colours?

Also, I’ve noticed that all the engines seems to be out of production besides the Amtrak West and maybe one or two more.

Magnus

Horizon has the engine. http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdId=ATH26296&utm_source=froogle also inquire at your LHS. They can still frequently reel things in even if they’re no in production

But this one is not the correct one or I’m I wong? Wasn’t it suppose to be another colour scheme?
