What train simulation software do you use?

I’m a happy user of Microsoft Train Simulator. Can’t wait until the second one comes out.

I wi***his poll allowed for multiple answers. I own both MSTS and Trainz. However, I haven’t had a chance to do much with either.

i have added another answer “Both Train sim and trainz” due to request, but if you have some other combination, just vote for “other”

I was given Trainz for Christmas last year but you have to use the number pad for controls. Unfortunately, the computer with the number pad won’t allow me to install Trainz and the one that will let it be installed doesn’t have a number pad! So I play Train Dispatcher 2.0 or 3.0, depending on the territory.

The best railroad operation simulation programs on the market: To use, one must have been involved in railroad operations from the ground up. Train Dispatcher 3 and Track Builder 3.

I use Microsoft Train Simulator was cool but still waiting for Microsoft Train Simulator 2 coming soon
At USA they sell Microsoft train Simulator 2 now or not yet still waiting ?

I use MS Train Simulator and am having a blast with it now that I have upgraded to Windows XP with 512 mb of RAM. I couldnt get it to run smooth on Windows 98 w/ p2-350. Now My wife comes in and says " What are you STILL on that!!" It is soooo habit forming

I use the Microsoft augmented by some from Maple Leaf Tracks.

I have MSTS and Auran 2004. I use 1 gig of ram and a Ti4600 vid card. There are a number of additional software such as the 20th Century ltd. And Sand Patch.

I am looking forward to MSTS 2.

I have both MSTS and TRS2004. I have been working with the “Surveyor” feature in TRS2004 and am well on my way to building a virtual version of my “real” model railroad. It hasn’t been without a few bumps as I learn to use it, but the results are most satisfying.

Something I’ve found really enhances my sim experience is the Rail Driver console. Granted, it’s over $150 with shipping, but once you use it, you’ll never control a sim train from the keyboard again. It is possible that they may be creating an AAR stand version, for the purists who feel that a console isn’t correct for their favorite loco.

I have Train Simulator

I don’t have any. I prefer model trains.

I have MSTS with the many addons like Sandpatch, LTV-Erie Minning Co. trainset, SRW, Regional Add-on Pack, The Activities , Paint Shop & many more. Working on obtaining the Cajon & Barstow additions.

You can use the mouse to drag controls in the cab to activate them. I haven’t used the program in awhile but I don’t recall anything where I HAD to use the number pad.

I use MSTS. I’m really looking for some add-ons for my software and don’t really know where to look as of yet. I’d like some free add-ons particularily of Canadian type, are there any?

Where does one find new routes to try?

I saw once that there was a commercial version of Kicking Horse Pass for CPRail, is that still available. As a conductor presently working for the Huron Central Railway out of Sault Saint Marie Ontario I really get a kick out of seeing some new places and scenery that MSTS offers.

I don’t have any train software - I run a mac…

First bit of train software that does come out for the mac, you can bet I’ll be buying it…if that EVER happens. [:(]

Currently using MSTS v1.2, Trainz has too much of a "Model layout " look for me, favorite things to do are messing with the files and editors.

  • to Roger Diotte - if you google “MSTS add ons”, you should find something.

Trainz Ultimate Train Collection. It has the geatest flexability and tons of free downloads of content. It is easy to build your own routes any size your PC can hold. You can be engineer or tower operator / dispatcher with the auto pilot feature the trains follow signals while you run your train against the traffic or controll them via signal indication as dispatcher/operator. There is a feature allowing you to build your own train equipment, buildings etc.I have ALL the sims and UTC is my favorite. trainmang

I’m new in this Forum but for what it’s worth, I’ve been using TRAINMASTER for a couple years now & it’s pretty cool. My favorite is bringing a loaded coal train down the Front Range into Denver; if it gets away from you, you will learn first-hand how tough it is to stop a heavy train on a downgrade! The braking controls can be selected (freight, passenger, graduated or direct release), you have a choice of several train types & sizes, & the sound is pure unadulterated EMD 567. You randomly hit yellow (and then red) signals so you get some practice stopping & slowing down. You do need a pretty fast graphics card or the display gets pretty jerky, but that’s the biggest drawback to it. They advertise in TRAINS magazine.

MSTS. Still waiting for #2
