A week ago a friend of mine gave me,some old life like train sets. Normaly ,I don’t monkey with junk,…but trains are trains. Some of the cars will go under the scrap torch and others for RIP track. What type of kadees , fit truck mounted couplers ? The locomotives are…well junk to say nicely, but two of the cars I’d like to keep and mount kadees on.[:D]

I once took some of my old Life Like cars from years back and mounted the Kadee #5 Draft Gear Boxes directly to the center underframe of the cars and also replaced the Wheel sets with Kadees or Proto 2000 wheels, which enhanced their overall performance substantially.
I saw in a used section of a hobby shop where someone had taken the spring of a Kadee and turned it upside down in the truck coupler pocket and it appeared that it fit well. Kinda wish I had purchased it since I to have some old truck mounted couplers myself. I have yet to try it but plan to do so. Good luck. Phil
I rebuilt all my old life like cars with kadee #5 couplers …first i cut off the coupler mount on the truck with a razor saw and then body mounted the draft gear box…later I replaced the trucks with metal wheelsets from atlas, kadee, and intermountain…here is my website that can show you how it’s done using an old tyco box car which is basically the same as the LL underframe…click the “next” button and it will take you thru the series of pictures with explanations to the bottom right …you’ll also need 2-56 screws, a razor saw, CA glue, and a file or piece of sand paper, and two pieces of styrene tubing - a 3/8" and a 1/4" http://community.webshots.com/photo/137793353/300555227CpifsB
That’s exactly what I do to ‘train-set’ rolling stock. Many of the cars are already at the right height for a Kadee #5. I simply snip off the truck-mounted couplers, and mount the Kadee box on the car floor. If it comes out too low, a red Kadee washer on the trucks will take care of that.
