I think this topic was done a while ago, but we’ve had a lot more members come in since then, so let’s start it again.[:D]
I don’t care for the old Family Lines/Seaboard System gray with yellow and red stripes, also the ACL purple and silver wasn’t that great. And KCS’s old road switcher scheme of white with sometimes, a black roof is terrible looking when it’s been used a while.[;)]
That’s pretty much it. Thanks, Elliot. The one that I was thinking of had the “SP” placed farther forward, right at the start of the red portion, but other than that, it’s identical.
You’re welcome Ben. They may have tried putting that big SP in a few places. Perhaps they dropped it when McDonalds protested.[:p][;)]
As I was looking for that I was thinking of Lionel’s SP Limited set from 1979. Are you familiar with the set with the ugly U boats. I think they were trying to do the scheme in the second link, and completely missed the colors. They ended up yellow with orange.
Even the pretty Daylight scheme looks bad on diesels. When I was in looking for that I saw a photo of a couple of helpers painted up to work with 4449. Nahhhhh.
U boats are ugly no matter what paint scheme is on them :), and Lionel’s shortening of them on the model you speak of sure didn’t help any. I’ve got a Santa Fe blue and yellow dummy of the same vintage(powered is more modern) currently receiving a command control upgrade for one of the members of the OGR forum. Every time I look at it, I can’t help but wonder how Lionel made an already ugly engine look even worse.
I’ve never seen the set of which you speak, however it sounds awful, especially given the quality of MPC decorating. I tried a quick Ebay search, but didn’t find one. I’ll keep looking.
Yeah Ben that is a tough one to find because it was from one of the high buck sets of it’s day. It was a nice set too, because of the cars that came with it. That was the set with the first repro of the Ft Knox gold bullion car. I think production was under 10,000. Of course this is more of a topic for CTT. Oops, sorry gang I digress.[:I][;)]
I’ll have to take a picture of mine and show it to you. It’s so ugly it’ll fit right in here even if it has no prototype.[:p][:0]
On the Southern Pacific locals the SP was positioned to allow adding SF after merger approval. On the Santa Fe the SF was positioned so that the SP could be added.
It is a beautiful paint scheme which combines the Southern Pacific Daylight colors with the historic Santa Fe image. Definately better than any of the BNSF schemes.
I do agree with Big_Boy_4005 that the other SP Daylight scheme is bad. It looks even worse in black and white: photo:
FWIW: I’m going to quote the good 'ol espee.railfan.net for this information:
I have to say these units are pretty ugly but what tops my list is UP Harbor Mist Grey and Armour Yellow [xx(] Of course my favorite scheme is Scarlet and Grime…err Grey and a few Shouldnt Paint So Fast units are welcome aditions[:)]
As threatened, here it is. Lionel’s version of ugly.
What they must have done is confuse Kodachrome with Daylight. I always remembered the red as being more of an orange, but the yellow was always yellow. I wish we could see the actual color of the loco in that black and white.
In the world of ugly Western schemes, few come close to Western Pacific’s “New Era” green-and-orange. While I like the WP and love the SN, I don’t know why they gave up the magnificent Zephyr scheme:
Yes, this subject has been posted before. It amazes me how some of us can like or dislike something so strongly, and others will take an opposite stand. Everyone sez how bad SP Kodachrome is, but DSchmidt sez it’s a beautiful paint scheme.
Me, I could never take the white and red SOO deisels seriously. Even Kodachrome is better in my eyes. I really like SP gray-n-scarlet, with the Roman Gothic letters. I’ve heard others rail against it.
But then again, I like BNSF’s new scheme, and UP’s gray-n-yellow. Maybe cuz I see them regularly here in Central Oregon. To each 'is own! Dan
CSX’s first scheme of gray with dark blue accent stripes-yuck.
CSX’s second scheme of stealth gray-double yuck.
Lehigh Valley’s experimental scheme of Tuscan red with big yellow bands. They only applied it to 2 units before it was dropped. Wise thinking.
