IF Big Blue wasn’t taken over by chessie cat and stupied NS. What would conrail look like engine wise??? Would CR have Heritage units???
No.
They’d probably have the largest fleet of SD80MACs, though they’d probably have had to switch to ACe’s at some point. And they’d probably have a bunch more GEs as well.
But no heritage units!
Hi
For the motive power that never became I´d liked to have seen SD70/75Is for high speed intermodal, like UP did after they re-calculated the benefits of AC units versus DC… Then they´d have also switched to SD70/75MACs because continuing with the 80MACs would have been too logic for CR mopo management
I´d say they´d have continued with the Whisper cabs, and all-blue DC scheme, although maybe with a whiteface? Check the mr. Burkholders’ GLE units, don´t they look nice!
What would CR AC4400s have looked like? I suppose they´d have some sort of white striping á la MACs, but definitely not the EMD bow-wave. I´m positive the Erie guys would have come up with something cool, although it´s pretty difficult to have a cool GE ![]()
For the heritage units, I can´t say anything else but imagine a EMD SD70MAC with flared radiators, in full ErieLackawanna GMY scheme… can you say SDP45 reborn?
But really, the best looking Conrail diesel in 2000 would have been an ex-NS SD70M with blue patchwork with CRQ lettering and numbered above CR SD60Is… the “Avenger”- scheme ![]()

Still planning that BigBlue layout
Heritage units on CR…I can see it now: (Waynes world dream vision music)
Reading lines “Bee Lines Service” units with the Reading blacked out and a big “CR” painted over it
(Same with LV Units)
Grubby, Grimy Penn Cental SD90’s With white P and Red C!
Seriously though, if CR had not been bought, and I were running Conrail…I WOULD STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM MY HERTIAGE AS POSSIBLE.
Might stir up more bad memories than good!
Although Cigar Band NYC unit would be cool!

Just a thought: Before you go calling someone else stupid, it would do you well to spell it correctly.[:)]
Who is to say tha CSX and NS couldn’t do heritage units based on old NYC/PRR/CR roads?
I’ll guess Conrail would have needed to grow to stay independant. Acquiring Illinois Central before CN got it should have done the job. Presumably Hunter Harrison’s plans on scheduled railroading would have worked on Conrail as well as they have on CN.

The only issue would be that they don’t own the rights to the trademarks of CR’s predecessors. They weren’t conveyed with the property.
Conrail was pretty proud to NOT be PC, and there were very, very few non CR or PC hires left at the end. There wouldn’t have been much sentiment to do heritage paint jobs - even if they had the rights.
CR would have still high maintenace problems that left CSX and NS selling CR engines to leasers and out of the country like Brazil. Just look at the CW40-8’s and their toasting horrible and ask a engineer they really did have problems. My freind who works for NS says their are only a couple of good Conrail engines the rest are pretty crappy.
They would have had more SD70, 80’s along with some SD70ACe’s and GEVO’s probaly in the White Nose scheme.
NS stupid eh? Do you remember the ‘Conrail Boyz’? The ones who stole cigars, TV’s, and etc from the CR intermodal trains up north, well Conrail caught some of them and put them in jail… for 24-48 hours. Just a big sign for them to steal some more we don’t care. Well the ‘Conrail Boyz’ did this on NS after the spilt. They didn’t put them in for hours they put them in court sending them to jail, pending on what the judge says. I belive the local paper said they can get up tp 1-5 years in jail but not sure what the years were.
The artical was in 2002 or 2003 in the Augusta Chronicle. Artical from the AP.

I would love to an ES44 with CR,PC,NYC and LHV paint on it.
