Whatever happened to NRE's 2GS36C-DE?

This one was a bit of a ringer. Instead of using “truck” engines it used two locomotive sized Cummis QSKs at 1800 hp each fitted to a former SD40-2 frame. It went above the usual genset expectation but that was three years ago.

the diesel shop shows it as a demonstrator unit. Here are some pictures of it from railroad pictures archives

This unit spent some time testing on the Lake Superior & Ishpeming as well as the Indiana Harbor Belt but sofar that’s it.

Thank you for the information. That is a shame that it has not gone any further than this. By virtue of occupation I have spent more time in yards this year than a dog’s chew toy. In every large yard I went the gensets were parked and in some cases being worked on by the vendor. Something along the lines of the 3600 may find acceptance with the railroads.

Something more in line with a GP38 I think.
