What's an Engineer's day like?

you have a few years to spend reading it…lol

work trains are great if you want to make big bucks…that overtime racks up fast just sitting on your butt doing nothing for hours at a time… not uncommon to make 8 hours OT just waiting for a taxi to come get you and take you home after a 12 hour sit sesstion…but any money on a work train is blood money if you ask me… most of the time even if you do manage to turn a wheel…your ordered by the DS to run for cover to clear the main so he can run “real trains”…and sitting for hours at a time doing nothing drives me nuts… many a time i got off the engin…found a hunk of railroad tie and hit ballist stones for just something to do…lol

CSXEngineer that seems a bit barbaric. In the UK I am only on call for 8 hoursa day and after that we cannot be called out. How do you guys have any social life?
My weekly roster might work out something like this
Sun Off
Mon On call 10.00 - 18.00
Tue On call 10.00 - 18.00
Wed off
Thu On call 16.00 - 00.00
Fri On call 16.00 - 00.00
Sat On call 20.00 - 04.00

Prior to the start of the week I can be moved 4 hours eac

Not in the states the tm’s, ds’s and chief ds’s do not care how much time is against the crew, the crew the conductor and I must go the whole 12 hours, it is not uncommon to tied a train down on the main being that I run on 2 main track ctc, the way they look at it their is always a relief crew that can be called to fini***he trip.

RGR THAT LOL!!

I’m still wondering about the going to eat with your wife AND your girlfriend!!??!!

How does that work CSXEng???

LOL!!

LC

That’s an easy one. The wife is at the home end and the girlfriend is at the other end. So it depends on which end you are at. [;)]

CSX engineer,
couldnt have said it better myself.

the deal with the wife and girlfriend… first off…NEVER tell your wife how you work…that way you can go to the girlfriends house after work… get some action…and then go home…only to be called out as soon as you walk in the door…when the wife askes why so soon…you just got home…you say…“short rest baby…short rest” lol…or as mentioned above…you get a woman at the other end of the road… i know of a few railroaders that have raised families at both ends of the road…one with a wife…another one with a girlfriend…

Do you still get 10 hours “rest” if you go over 12?

I could never figure out how I could almost never be “home” more than 8 hours but I could sit in the YMCA for 16. I put rest and home in quotes because rest starts as soon as you are off duty and they call 2 hours before duty so rest can be 5 actual hours. They did have to pay us after 16 hours at the away terminal. Once we were called right at 16 hours and sat on the engine for three hours watching the yard crew making up our train. Even though you walked out of the YMCA right onto the train I guess they didn’t want us to be comfortable while we were being paid.

Yes, ten hours rest if still on duty at the end of twelve hours. Also, Norfolk Southern gives road crews ten hours undisturbed rest at their home terminals. Note I said road crews, it doesn’t apply to yard crews or local crews. By undisturbed, I mean the phone is not to interrupt rest until ten hours has passed.

Held-away-from-home terminal still starts after laying at the away-from-home terminal for sixteen hours.
