Possibly one or more of the loco’s was not MU’ed to save fuel. When the train couldn’t make it, the idleing locos were added to the consist to restart the train up the hill. If the five locos could restart the train then one or more of them was not being used on the way up the hill.
The above makes sense and it could be that some of the locos were set not to go to full power.
Saw a video of a stalled UP freight. 844 with it’s excursion train came up behind it. Called in, got permission, and without uncoupling it’s own cars, it pushed the freight up and over. There were a number of large diesels leading that freight too, as in this one.
Don’t know what “changed the setup” means, but it seemed to work.
