Whats the Difference Between a 671, 671R, and a 671RR?

I just bought a 671RR off of ebay with some other cars and track and was wondering? I believe its somethin with the eunit in the 671 and 671 R but what about the 671RR.

Thanks

Check this link out on the Post War Lionel site:

671 S-2 Turbine 1946 - 1949 & 1952

That covers the specific differences between the models.

The RR in 671RR stands for re-run. During the Korean war, a material shortage caused Lionel to be unable to obtain all of the necessary parts for magnetraction. I believe the Alnico magnets were the problem, although I’m not positive abot that.

Because of this, on all magnetraction engines, they reverted back to the pre-magnetraction numbers, in some cases appending the RR designation to indicate that they weren’t exactly the same as the previous model bearing the same number.

For example, the 671RR retained the sintered iron drivers of the 681, rather than reverting to the nickel-rimmed drivers of the older 671.

The 671R was a 671 Turbine that had was able to be used with the electronic set. Rather than use a lever for e-unit lock-out, the e-unit coil was physically disconnected from the track power by a plug and socket arrangement. This also enabled it to be connected to an electronic set receiver located in the tender.

Thanks a lot that answers my question the only problem I see is that My engine kinda comes with the right but wrong tender its a 2046W but it says NEW YORK CENTRAL not PENNSYLVANIA Oh well Guess I might have to look for a different one or at least the shell.

If you have te 671R that is from the electronic set it should come with a 6466W style tender. I do not know the number of this particular tender, (6466WR?) as I believe it is special to this set. At the very least it will have an Electronic set circle emblem. This particular set had a set of relays very similar to the whistle relays in each car. It activated the couplers to each care seperatley, kind of first generation TMCC.

Just reread your post and realized that you have the 1952 671RR and therefor the 2046W is the correct tender. It should have diecast bar end trucks. A repo top is readilly avalible.

trainsandmusic,

The 671R came with the 4671W tender. It looks identical to the 671W/2020W tenders, but it has the receiver for the electronic set.

But I do not think it should be marked NYC.

Thats was why I said the tender was the right tender but wrong tender. Correct tender but wrong shell

rt,

You can get a 2046W Lionel Lines shell from any parts dealer or ebay for about $20-$30.

Yes I know but the correct shell is PENNSYLVANIA I’m sure I can get that to from just about any of them.
