A few years ago I got around 40 average to mostly free-rolling cars on a 3’ x 7’ floor layout. I beleive the only engines that could pull it without slipping were a LL 4-wheel drive GP38 and a LL 0-4-0 switcher. The caboose was almost touching the front of each engine.[:D][:D][:D]
65 36’ to 40’ (modelling the late '40’s) pulled by 4 unit all powered Stewart FT’s ABBA on 24" curves and 2% gradeson a club layout. Never got hot! Lost our site and the layout is now landfill…sob!
Let’s see…well, since all I have is a loop of track on the floor, I’ve pulled a consist of 34 cars ranging from heavy weight passenger cars to grain hoppers with two HO Kato SD80MACs.
Well, for a single engine performance, my Athearn SDMAC Geni pulled about 38 cars around mine. I have about 90 feet fo main line track. It also took the roughly 15 feet of 2.2 percent grade. I couldnt stop it on the grade and restart, but it was a sight to see. Only did for 4 trips, then I called it. Most of the cars were larger though with 22 of them being 54’ feet or longer. But they are in good shape with metal wheels and roll pretty well.

I am sure my BLI Cab foward could pull quite abit, but havent had the chance to flog it.
N Scale: About 65 or so, 73’ Centerbeams, Articulated Autoracks and 48’ Articulated well cars. Total length was about 85 40’ car equivalents. Pulled it with three Kato SD70MACs at the National N Scale Convention, San Diego.
