Over the past year I have purchased 3 of this SD70M units from Athearn, but haven’t started working on them yet. Today I was checking out on of them and noticed that the nose door stuck way out. What is up with that? Is there a fix for it, or should I just except?
Okay, all of a sudden I can’t post pictures or quote anyone. Does anyone know what is wrong?
Is my picture coming up for you guys?
Looks like it sticks out pretty good on the real one:
Nope, just computer gobbly gook. But when I quote your post, the image shows up. Weird.
Are you using IE7 by any chance? Seems to be an issue with this forum’s software.
Well, Im’ not sure what IE7 is but in the past all of my pictures would show up. I would take my picture straight from my Photobucket page, copy the bottom link under [IMG] and paste it here but now I can’t do that nor do the whole quote thing.
IE 7 is the Microsoft web browser (Internet Explorer) that is the most current one for Windows. Some of us use the older version (6) or a different browser. I do as you do with photobucket and have had no problems with Firefox. I refuse to go to IE7 until all these bugs are worked out.
You may need to get hold of bergie to see if there is a “fix” you can use.
You know what, we did upgrade pur Internet Explorer the other day, and before that everything was working fine. I’ll email Bergie right now. Thanks Ah, how do I get ahold of Bergie? What is his email address?
I saw one for sale on ebay awhile agom and the fella who was selling it had removed the door and sanded it thinner on a flat sanding block. It looked way more prototypical that way.

The Genesis SD70M’s nose door is way to thick. It can be shaved down very easy to match the correct thickness of the prototype.
I have several of these and some of the Overland models too. The door thickness was an eyesore with my Genesis models. If you remove the shell, you can pop the door off by pushing on the back side of the door. They are glued on and usually come off very easy.
Once it is off, you can lay it on a flat file and continue to work it back and forth until you have the correct thickness. I was able to do this with all of the units factory painted without causing any damage to the paint on the door front. It is about a fifteen minute job once you do one and the results are great. When you get the right thickness, glue it back on.
