What's Up with Campbell Scale Models

Looking for buildings for the layout and have always liked the Campbell Scale Models stuff. A search of Walther’s web site showed that of the 127 different Campbell kits they carry, only 30 are in stock with no expected date of arrival for out of stock items. Anyone know what is happening? Sure hope they are still around and did not get swallowed up by the “Dark Side” like MDC and Athearn…

Campbell Scale Models is a small company that doesn’t make all products all the time, so no supplier is going to have everything listed in the catalog. Campbell is not unique in this practice, either – many hobby manufacturers are small “cottage industries” with limited staff and production capacity.

I don’t know what’s up with the out of stock stuff. It’s not only campbell. I model CP Rail and it seems it seems like most companies offerings in this road name are always out of stock. I know if my company had a hot seller, I’d be doing more runs of them. The moneys already been spent on the molds and tooling and that’s where most of the cost is.This just baffles me. IHC has a Canadian Pacific Hudson they just released about 6 or 8 months ago, and now I see it’s not even listed on their web site anuymore.
I’ll be bumbed if I can’t get one of those.

Unfortunately, most manufacturer’s run their products in batches. It could be years before they repeat it. Or if they don’t sell well that may be the end of it. If you really want it and you can afford it, you need to buy it when you see it. Keep an eye out at train shows, things have a way of turning up from time to time.

Enjoy

You could try Valley Model Trains - he usually carries a lot of the more obscure/better kits. J.R.

As I understand it, one Duncan B. Campbell has taken over production of the Campbell kits from the Campbells who live in Durango, and is not related to them. He and a few friends are working full time to work down the backlog of orders. He doesn’t presently have a Web site, but plans one once he gets caught up. He does have an Email address. It’s DuncanBCampbell@aol.com
I would send him an Email, as he has gotten enough work done to start small ads giving the Email address.
Don’t know if he is also going to revive the Weston figures.

You are more likely to find Canadian roads at Canadian hobby shops. Many specialize in them and even order special runs sold only in Canada.

SPFan Thanx- anybody know any good Canadian hobby shops or web addresses?

jrbarney, thanks! That’s the information I was hoping to find. It gives me a good reason why Walther’s is so short on the kits at the moment. Glad Campbell will be continueing to produce the great kits they have made.

Check out this link: http://www.overlandmodels.com/canada.htm.
I am familiar with Niagara Central in St Catherines and George’s in the Toronto area. Both have an extensive selection of Canadian brass and plastic models. Maybe some of the Canadians can chime in here.

Check out the NMRA Directory, they list dozens of Canadian shops:
