I can appreciate a good weathered boxcar as much as the next person. But is there something here that I am missing? It is not brass either.

I dunno but i’d be one happy camper if i got a 200 dollar return on a 12 dollar boxcar.
I don’t know but that don’t surprise me on ebay then someone will try to get it for about 25.00 now that they won or will try to say this and thats wrong when they get it to try and get as much back as they can.
I know what it must be. The metal wheels and metal Kadee couplers, how could I have missed that. [:0]
frankly, it’s a *** good weathering job (not that I’m into weathering)… but let’s face it. it looks like a real American box car would look in the rail yard.
If one was going to build a collection of train cars like this however, he could find himself spending more than if he were to buy fine brass models, cause fine weathering or not, it’s still a “Made in China” plastic car.
That is a spectacular weathering job, but $197 worth? Just another example of what what some people are willing to pay for things. Maybe the guy heats his home with spare $100 bills. Must be nice to be rich.
My guess is that weathering job was done from a set of photos of the real car.
Some people with money falling out of their pockets and silver spoons up their puppet see that obeject and say ‘I simply MUST have it!’ Don’t matter what the price is, cause they can afford anything. No normal person would spend $200 on a nicely weathered boxcar.
If you would like to visit the other end of the crazy Ebay spectrum, check this one out. This was a Lionel engine. People actually bid on it.

The fact is I have 50 or so pics from other weathered boxcars, flatcard, hoppers, ect on Ebay that would make this one look like a Tyco model ( no offense). IMO this weathering job is not even close to the $200.00 mark. Some of the custom ones go for around $60.00 to $90.00. I wish I could post some pics of the great ones I have pics of so you could see.
BIGBOY,
Take a look at the guys other auctions. I’ve seen it all now.
If you look at there other auctions he has 2 more selling now
But like my daddy always said a fool and his money is soon parted PLEASE INTRODUCE ME TO THIS FOOL lol[:D]
I hear people complaining about somebody paying $200 for a weathered boxcar that cost $12 brand new… you know Ebay is a prime example of how a free market economy works. You may not have $200 to spend on something like that, but if somebody does, and is willing to pay for it, even if it is a $12 car, somebody’s gonna buy it. The other fact that some people are missing here… The winning bidder paid $197 for that car. He was WILLING to pay that… whether family members and friends ‘upbid’ the item or not. He was still WILLING to pay the price. Maybe he has a special memory of the Rock Island, or maybe like someone earlier posted, he is building a ‘show train’ of nothing but highly detailed and weathered cars. Whatever the case, he was WILLING to pay $197 for that car, and that’s his perogative. Don’t complain about people that have ‘silver spoons’ in their mouths and have tons of money to throw away… Why don’t you LOOK at the starting bid… $11.11. Tells me that whoever bid on that car REALLY wanted it. You’re telling me you’ve never wanted something so bad you would pay almost anything for it? I think somebody needs to understand how the concept of Ebay works before they complain about the people that pay high dollar for something they really want. I’m not rich, but if I’m outbid in an auction, that’s just the way auctions work. Has nothing to do with silver spoons and deep pockets. Somebody else is just willing to pay more for it than I am. Does that make me resentful? No, of course not. I don’t see the point in paying $200 for a $12 car, but at the same time, I don’t see the point in whining that he’s got too much money to spend and is an idiot for spending his own money. Come on, think logically people. Just because you don’t want to spend more than $50 on a superdetailed car, doesn’t mean isn’t not okay for somebody else to spend $200. That’s his decision, not yours.
I’ve been there on the Selling end of those unbelievable bids. And I’ll admit some were not warranted. But others were.
In this scenario, you had the winner place (presumably) a $200 proxy bid, and then took off for the weekend. There was the main culprit. Add to that a European buyer who took some large stabs at the car based on the favorable exchange rate. And, boom, the car zooms up in price! There were no shill bidders in this one. A few legit buyers with some spending money on hand. A little bragging rights competition perhaps.
Folks,
We must not forget that we live in a country with many, many millionaires who can spend whatever they want for something and when it comes to Ebay, they won’t be beaten if they want something.
We’ve all seen and heard about these people. They will spend $10 million for a house and then live in the small, cozy family room in the back.
They will spend millions of dollars on that boat they just have to have and rarely find time to enjoy it.
I remember my wife speaking to a very rich woman about where her daughters went to elementary school. The lady told my wife that it cost 25 a year for each kid. My wife replied that that was a lot of money for grammar school. Heck, $2,500 a year sounded like a lot to my wife. Then the lady clarified for my wife that it was $25,000 per year per kid; not $2,500 each. My wife almost fell off her chair. These girls lived in a town in Connecticut that is renowned for their great public school system but they just had to go to a private school which cost the parents $50,000 per year for both of them. Heck, my wife and I live the whole year on less than these people spent on private elementary school per year.
Well, I’m not complaining. If millions of dollars really made people all that happy, why are so many of them spending their millions on drugs to blow up their nose and why is the divorce rate even higher for these people.
I’ll play with my plastic cars, weather them myself, thank you, and enjoy my retirement without all those “things” that sometimes can just bog you down.
Mondo
What I see there is a bidder who emotionally refuses to walk away from a busted auction and admit that he lost his bid. Only to be finally beaten by someone with more ca***han he does.
Sad.
I would like to see the increase in best offers to head off such bidding wars.
Have you seen the 200- asking prices for a completed walthers building kits? FSM and wood built kits are one thing but asking that kind of money for kits that are easily built is ridiculous.
All I have to say to the winner is… enjoy your 200 dollar boxcar, I hope you pull it with a 400 dollar locomotive and everything stays on the track.
Nothing special about the car that I can see, but some people who are bidding on it sure don’t understand the concept of true value.

How much is the Monalisa worthed? We’re talking millions here. How many?I don’t honestly know, but something I know is that if it showed up in a garage sale offered to unaware potential buyers,it probably wouldn’t sell for more than a few hundred bucks at best. However,if it was ever offered for sale in the big London auction(I forget the name),there would be some oil king ready to bid the equivalent of his country’s economy to buy it only for the pride of owning this unique item. What really makes the value of an item is how bad someone wants it and obviously how much he is willing and capable to pay for it.Any estimated value goes out the window when potential buyers compete for a unique item they really want and can afford.
This is the beauty about Ebay.I’ve purchased a few items so far, perfectly aware that I paid original MSRP and even more in some cases,so that I could set my hands on a much desired item.I’ve also been outbidded a few times just the same,as I had reached what was “my” rational evaluation of the item and someone else hadn’t.Have I been a last minute sniper?Sure,by all means,as I quickly discovered that others won’t shy away from doing it to me but it’s all in the game.If someone beats me at the bidding game,I suppose that he wanted the item more than I did.Now this raises a question in my mind…would I be so rational if I had a bigger wallet?I suppose not…
maybe it’s full scale instead of HO??
