whats youor favorite railroad to model
No vote where’s your other or CN CP choices? TB
oh yah sorry…
Ahhh! so lacking in choices. I can think of so many alternatives that are
not listed. My personal choices are: Great Northern Railway first,
Northern Pacific Railway second and Northwest style logging roads third.
My $.02, for whatever it’s worth.
Lots of roads aren’t listed, and there’s no choice of “other” to be found. Funny thing is that PRR (from what I’ve heard) is the most modeled road there is, and it’s not even listed. A lot of others not mentioned: NP, WP, NH, WM, C&O, B&O, L&N, BN, CB&Q, D&RGW, NKP, GN, etc., etc. The ones listed are just a few of the largest current or recent names in railroading. There are probably far too many to successfully list in a poll of this sort.
Hi, Pickwick. Nice to have you posting again as it seems to have been a long while between posts!
Out of the choices you offered, I chose New York Central as I lived in New York during the 60s and early 70s and had a relative who worked for the Central. But, I actually model Seaboard Coast Line 1967-73. As you continue to explore the hobby you’ll find that there are many ways to categorize U.S railroad companies as there have been countless mergers. That’s why your list “could be” a little longer.
This might help: Check out www.railpictures.net Click on the “Railroad” choices icon and as you scroll down you will see “Current Railroads” and “Fallen Flags” railroads (past roads that have dissappeared through mergers or bankruptcy. You can then edit your poll choices. Canadian railroads are included as they do have a lot of neat and cool equipment!
By the way, how are you doing with your modeling? I’ve had periods where I’ve worked on my models, then I may stop suddenly and not touch them for a long stretch. Then I get the “fever” again and dive right into it! Especially now with all the neat new innovations available to model railroaders today!
Cheers and High Greens!
hey sorry bout the poll, i found a site with like a million road names, so i found some common ones…as for antonio’s post, im kinda in a stuck phase of my layout, cause see, im only 13 and i have a TON of homework and sports, so weekends is when i MIGHT be able to get my parents to take me to a hobby shop to get what i need. next im gonna get some woodland scenics realistic water for my lake as for ive heard it works well. then i will lay my track back down and start the rest of my scenery. i hope to upgrade to dcc soon, my new athearn loco has a dcc chip already in it so i just need a dcc power pack. cant weight untill its all finished!
My SIG line should give you a hint!
Well, Pickwick, since it’s not on the list-- and that’s okay, because you sound like you don’t have a lot of spare time right now–my favorites are:
Denver and Rio Grande Western
Southern Pacific
Western Pacific
Colorado and Southern
Great Northern
Pennsy
Chesapeake & Ohio
All steam, of course.
And that Woodland Scenics Realistic Water works like a charm. Just make sure your base is solid, because the stuff looks for any little hole it can seep through. Have fun!

Ontario Northland.
The railroads I like are not on the list:
Southern
Kansas City Southern
Norfolk Southern
Texas and Pacific

Well, out of the ones on your list, I chose the NYC. BUT, you left off virtually every railroad I’ve got engines for!
NKP
P&E
P&PU
PT Co.
TP&W
M&StL
IC
GM&O
Alton
M&O
W&LE
C&IM
C&EI
C&NW
Milwaukee
Rock Island
Where was C,B&Q?
Next time you try this include Other, the world’s FAVORITE railroad.
Doug, in Utah
I had to choose CSX only cause Conrail was split up between them and NS, and at one point, if you look @ NYC’s family tree, they became PRR, PC, which in the early70’s folded and became part of Conrail…which leads me to my choice of CSX. I do modern times, but love CR as that’s what I grew up watching here in COLD Syracuse NY
Union Pacific
Santa Fe
Southern Pacific
Conrail
CSX
Grand Rapids Eastern
Same Poll, different choices, still no vote from me. No one ever seems to put on the largest (area-wise) railroad on the east coast. Atlantic Coast Line (Seaboard Airline and Seaboard Coast Line included… as well as the L&N, FEC and whatever else they took over)
Purple and Silver all the way!!!
Can’t forget my other line running… Amtrak. Yeah I know, the Acela train didn’t run with the Purple and Silver ACL line, but it does in my town.
I chose the NYC of coarse but I also like the New Haven.
Easy…the DL&W.
OK, throw EL and Erie in there too. Still, I like working with the CNJ, since it’s kind of fun modeling bad track, faded locos and all that decay!
I couldn’t vote, given the choices. But from my sig I bet you can guess what I’d vote for. [:D]
