My best engine is probably my Genesis SD75M, even though my Bowser Challenger is the biggest, and, um, metalest, because it’s got the best detail out of all my diesels, and it has a very smooth and quiet drive now that it’s fixed.[:)]
Mine would be a Athearn GP7 I got back in 75…That geep is as smooth running as a Kato…Of course it is well broken in as it has a lot of real miles on it…
My best (and favorite) engine is my Trix Big Boy. Beautiful craftsmanship and now that it has finally broken in, it pulls quite well. Even up my steep (4%) curved (22" radius) hillside.
My best steamer would be my HO Rivarossi UP FEF-3 #844. Smooth, dettailed, quiet, and can pull the bumper off a car. My best diesel would be my HO Athearn RTR Conrail SD50 #6809. It doesn’t buzz or growl at all, runs great and IMO is as detailed as the P2K SD50s. But, 6809 might have to sire to an even better diesel, because I just bought a P2K Conrail SD60M. I’ll have to see which is better when it arrives.
“Best” in what way? Best detail? Best pulling power? Most reliable? Best sound? Best at running, in general? Best in price for apparent value? Best for warranty service?
If you mean overall, then my BLI Hudson. For detail, my P2K 0-6-0.
my best is a TAURUS hi-speed electric engine by ROCO, which runs like an arrow . and my favorite is a chinese diesel engine DF11-0018 by bachmann china , its weight is even heavier than a brass one .
I have to say, its a tough fight, my best running would be any of the 3 Genisus SD75M’s I have, OR the Overland/RPP SD60M. Detail? Um, one of the units I’m working on now, either BNSF 2460 (GP30), 6460 (sd45-2), 7307 (SD40-2 rebuilt SD40), 7330 (SD40-2 rebuilt SD40), or 801 (Dash 8-40CW). Looks in the way of paint and the such? My UP SD40T-2… Grrrrr I can’t choose. I’m gonna go with BNSF 7330, SD40-2, RPP shell, & chassis, A-line/PPW drive system, Ditrax DCC… Pics later this summer.
My best HO engine is my Atlas Guilford GP40 - It has perfect detail, runs precise as a clock, and I got it for a good price. Same goes for all of my Atlas diesels, HO and N. Then there’s my Kato F40PH, the pride of the fleet.
Depends on how you define best - my best detailed is probably one of my Bachmann UK diesels, and they’re also some of the best runners I have in HO or OO scale. In terms of longetivity it would have to be the Minitrix Br. 111 (German electric loco) that I bought used as part of a train pack with two S-Bahn coaches and a cab car. A very neat matched set, despite being over 10 years old (judging by the “made in West Germany” on the packaging it must be pre-1989) and it runs as well as new N scale locos.
