What's your favorite cowl?

Mine has got to be the EMD FP45[8D]. Nothing beats it’s looks and power. Second would be the EMD F40C. Long live EMD Cowls!!![:D][:D][:p]

Personally I’m fond of those lovely EMD F’s–F3’s, F7’s and the ilk. Classic Art Deco streamlining that still looks modern sixty years later!

Has to be the E-units. Favourite of those would have to be the E-5, stainless steel, fluted sides, the long, sloping nose that was changed from the E-7 onwards - beautiful locos. Pity there’s only one survivor (9001A at the IRM) but that’s far better than no survivors at all!

Since were including covered wagons, the Baldwin Sharknoses both Passenger and Freight.

I like the FP7 - only a basic F, lengthened by 4 feet so it could carry extra boiler water. Any of the F’s or E’s were great looking, and the paint schemes applied to them were outstanding. I have a P2K Rock Island E8 - Now that is how God and EMD meant for a passenger engine to look like.

Boxed nose Alco PA! No other cowl is sweeter…

I agree, awesome look. Alco PA looks great.

Good choice AJ

I love the classic lines of F and E units but FM c liners are just so ugly they are beauitifull. Also being a crazy canuck I can’t forget the new cowls CN’s SD50&60F’s, the bombadier HR616 and GE dash 840CM’s which live on CN & BCR and CP’s SD40F red barns all are unique. TB

You forgot the DL109.One of the uglyest cowl units ever. But they are neet

As much as I loved seeing any cowl bodied locomotive, my al time favourite is one I’ve never seen in person.

The Alco PA.

Seeing one in pictures in front of a passenger train or in the D&H’s case, a freight, just an amazing sight.
The long boxy nose, A1A trucks all make up a regal looking locomotive.
I just hope Doyle gets one running soon.

Mine is the one that started the Chicago fire.

But of course, you know I’m going to pick those Santa Fe FP45s! That body style and history, to me, makes them special. One of the situations that I really apprecite is that Santa Fe saved several of them and donated them to museums.

One cowl you didn’t mention that’s also special. The Chicago Metra F40C. Interesting story recently. Though officially retired, 2 or 3 of them were “Reactivated” recently due to some of the “Brand New” MP36 locomotives (they look more like RVs!) breaking down with electronic glitches! Ironic that the locomotives they were replacing had to replace them temporarily! Now that’s poetic justice! I do hope that 1 or 2 of those F40Cs are saved from the scrap torch.

Ditto brother Aggro! And Doyle McCormack should be nominated for sainthood in the Church of Our Lady of Blessed Acceleration![angel]

Ah! I forgot the F40Cs! Beautiful units in their own right.

I personally like the cowl induction on the 1970 SS Big Block Chevy Chevelle!! OOPPSS!! Wrong Forum! Just kidding aside, It’s those beautiful PA’s! Also those E-8/9’s E-7’S!!!

Hey Dave9999, Like that picture! [(-D] Is that a A-B-A? or C-C-C?

ahhh u forgot the SD50F, SD60F, SD40-2F, Dash8-40CM all canadian

Shaun u r correct on that one i really wanna make a sd40-2f but i dont no how

The F3’s and F7’s. they had the most beautyfull paint scheme in the 40’s and 50’s :
ATSF’s Warbonnet, SP’s Black Widow, WP’s Zephir, CBQ, GN, NP,CP…Colourfull Classics…

For me, it’s gotta be the big , beautiful, E’s, PA’s, DL 109’s, FA’s, & last but certainly not least, those Erie Builts
