Does anybody know what the wheel base measurement is for a UP FEF-2? How about a 7000 class 4-8-2? I have pulled three different books off of my shelves, but none of them list wheel bases for these locomotives. Are there any good websites or books I can refer to?
And while you’re here, would you mind seeing if you couldn’t give me some help with my two other inquiries?[:)] They are:
“I need some advice” on the Model Railroader general discussion page
and
“Union Pacific Beaver Tail Cars” on the Classic Trains forum
Any help you can give me would be most appreciated.
I can’t answer your question directly because I don’t have any UP resource material but I can tell you how to measure it. The wheel base is the distance from the vertical centerline of the first driver to the vertical center line of the last driver. So if an engine had four 84" drivers the first center line is at the center of the first axle which adds 42" to the wheel base the next two drivers add 84" each and the last one adds 42". You need to add the distance between drivers to allow for brake shoes so you add the three equal distance to this number to get the wheelbase. You might check the index for MR drawings as I would be certain they published one at some time on the FEF which would give you the information. PRR I can help you. UP I can’t.
