Wheel gauge fix! Has anyone else tried this?

My layout in progress is old tubular installed on foam roadbed with ballast. I am learning that when it comes to track laying precision, close enough is not good enough. If I was directly on wood I would most likely be okay, but my decision to attempt sound deadening foam roadbed has made keeping the track, as it gets installed, leveling a real chore. Even the slightest imperfection that is unnoticed becomes a problem for rolling stock that is also not perfect. But I forge on, because of my interest in late prewar and postwar trains, and my desire to have a semblance of a hi rail layout.

Anyway, a number of pieces of rolling stock have given me grief with wheel gauge slop, wanting to be too narrow. I have been seeking advice on solutions but haven’t found much that seemed good.

I got an idea to try something and think it might work well. I did my first guinea pig tonight. Has anyone else ever tried this?

Electrical heat shrink tubing! It’s black, discreet, easy to install, stays in place, and if there is a need to remove or adjust it, you can just scrape it off with a knife.

What do you think?
