Does anyone know when Southern Pacific took its U33C out of service? Went some of them to UP after the merger?
I have a model of #8663 and just want to know when it was retired…
They were all gone by the early to mid 80s.They were long gone by the time they were absorbed by the Borg.
Do any survive espeefoamer?
I think all of SP’s U-Boats were gon by circa 1985. Four U25B’s remain in spirit, as the Sulzer rebuilds we called the Popcicles. But the SP sent those down the road by 1990 at the latest.
Are any 6 axle U-boats still in service in the US, shortline or other? How about the Santa Fe rebuilds which are SF34s? Somebody correct me on that one if my id is wrong. A little info on those would be cool is someone is in the know…
The last one was retired between October 1, 1989 and August 1990. I have a timetable from the former date that lists U33C(s) however, my roster from the latter date does not.
The last ones I saw in Arizona were in late 1987 and early 1988, That winter the 8777 came through Yuma with a 3000 horsepower rating on her. I also saw the 8727 running around in the summer of '88. She was the last one I saw.
ATSF 9500 Class SF30C’s … Unihead Ed has pictures of some going to Brazil. (all were modified 8700 Class U36C’s) …
Santa Fe’s U33C’s (8500 Class) and U23C’s (7500 Class) were dogs. Spent an awful lot of their service life in storage. ATSF fired them up for a few weeks just before returning them to the lessors. (Smoking rustbuckets deluxe!)
Didn’t Minnesota Commercial buy an SF30C a few years back to add to their assorted collection of diesels?
SP U25BE 3100 is at the Orange Empire Railway Museum. As far as I know, this is the only exsisting SP U boat.
Lake Superior & Ishpeming operates a fleet of about a dozen ex-BN U30C’s in taconite service in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
The TransKentucky has U36Bs in service and a couple of U28Bs still on the property. They run between Paris and Maysville, Kentucky.
