Regarding UP’s locomotive roster, who would have thought that their SD70M fleet is getting “old.” Granted, the earliest ones are ten years old. Time sure does fly!
And there’s still plenty of SD40-2’s showing up at North Salt Lake Yard, along with occasional C40-8Ws, and SD40/45 T-2s. I used to see some C40-8s, but not so much any more.
Over in Midvale, the Utah Railway has a couple of borrowed BNSF SD40-2s still in BN green and black.
The Union Pacific 40C-8 Units are frequently appearing at the head of CN Trains rolling through Michigan. The UP SD70ACes occasionally show up on CN Michigan trains, but mostly it is older UP power.
I saw a number of UP SD40-2s on the Sunset Route between Phoenix and Tucson this week. Very few on the point, but usually one or two mid-consist, particularly on merchandise trains, with 70Ms or E44s in the lead, sometimes a SD-60 up front. Few 70ACes, primarily on double-stacks.
