I guess this question is aimed at other Aussies… Where do you guys find the best places to get hold of styrene sheets? I’ve looked at Spotlight and Officeworks and couldn’t find any…
Thanks!

I’m in the US, but I skipped the hobby and craft stores entirely on this one. Instead, I ordered large styrene sheets (3 1/2 x 5 feet) directly from the manufacturer, in my case US Plastics. At the time, these sheets were about $8 US each, and even with shipping (I bought 2) it was a lot cheaper than buying tiny sheets at a store. I would look around for plastics distributers. You might find one close enough that you can drive over and pick up a sheet or two, and I’m sure someone will ship it locally.
Another option is to go to a hardware store or department store that sells plastic “For Sale” signs. These are just sheet styrene, generally, and they’re a lot cheaper than the same product without the lettering in a craft shop.
Probably in the aisle next to the styrene pillowcases…[banghead]
If you’re after the white expanded polystyrene stuff you could try Aquarium supplies. I got a decent piece for free at one of those.
Mike
haha, great! Hopefully I can get one that will match my styrene blankets and pajamas! [D)]
Where exactly are you? I live south of Sydney, but have had no trouble obtaining large sheets of styrene, perspex and ABS from commercial sign fabricators/signwriters.
Cheers,
Mark.
My family has just moved down to Launceston Tasmania, so I don’t really know what’s around. It’s not a very big town. I never thought of looking at a signwriter. I will look around for some plastic places… thanks for the advice all
You might look at this site. He has Australian links.

You know, I can’t find an Aussie style burger in the states either. I’m talkin at least 1/2 lb of beef, bacon (looks more like ham down under), swiss cheese, beet root slice, pineapple ring and - of course - the fried egg! Did I miss anything? Had some kind of sloppy dressing on it too, and a tomato, I think. Maybe koala poop. And a bun that’s not up to the job. Man, what a mess!
But I enjoyed my trip down under. Would like to do it again soon, but you guys are far away from Michigan. Next time, maybe I should stuff my carryon with high qualty locos. Sounds like I could sell them for a profit! Cheers!
G’day mates! Sounds like fair tucker to me. But, you forgot the flake (shark) take-out. Yeah.
In 1989, Yahoo Serious’ “Young Einstein” movie was released, and; MTV’s Nickelodeon Network, in the states promoted the movie with (8) prize drawing winners: You and three members of your family were flown to Australia, with Nick’s US Production Staff, for a week on the mainland (primarily Mebourne), and one week on your own in Tazmania.
So, my prize-winning 10-year old daughter appeared on Nicklodeon’s “Double Dare” in Melbourne with the Aussies vs. the Yanks in their September 1990 “Kangaroo Cup” show. Then we had a whole week touring Tazmania with two nights in Hobart, then Launceston and Bicheno, with two more back in Hobart.

P.S. #1: We got a kick out of Aussie-style salads & pizza. Just loved Aussie sausages, and you couldn’t beat the fresh seafood including Tazmania’s Atlantic Salmon.
P.S. #2: If anyone gets the opportunity to visit Austrailia - You just have to see Melbourne’s extensive Metro System and especially its trams and downtown station.
Try searching on this site, you should find something useful:

Milkman,
As usual lots of off topic comments (some are pretty funny though). Signwriters is a good place to start, you can also try plastic molders like
I assume your after styrene sheet for buildings etc. have you tried Toyworld, there’s one in York St Launceston? I’m in Brissy and most toyworld shops have styrene and other plastic modelling stuff.
if you’re after the foam for scenery the AMRM mag has adds for foam for scenery. You should be able to pick up a copy at a descent newsagent.
Hope this helps
