With the demise/retirement of my current N-scale locomotive fleet which I have had since the late 1970s early 1980s, I am going to need replacement units. I know there are many locomotives out there carrying markings for these roads, but I really don’t want to buy just anything. What I want is a listing of what diesels/electrics these roads actually used in the 1980s. I am modeling the Northeastern part of the US, primarily New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Where do I look?

In the case of Conrail, the book Conrail Motive Power Review 1986 - 1991 by Paul Withers is an excellent resource if you have access to it. Although the title says 1986, a lot of the units obtained/purchased earlier by the Conrail predessor roads are shown including GP 7, 9, and 30. If you are into detailing stuff, there are a lot of photos of all the classes.

Although it looks like this is a work in progress, they do show a roster for 1976. Some of the equipment listed here would have been retired prior to the equipment shown in the Wither’s book.
I look to see if I can find the Wither’s book.
The website is interesting but given that itr shows it hasn’t been updated since 2006, I really wonder how hard the owner is working on it.
