I know that Rivarossi has been out of business for a long time, but I just picked up one of there HO scale C420s. The only thing is two of the axles need to be replaced. I know I probably won’t get rivarossi parts, but will any other manufacturer’s parts interchange? Thanks for your help.
I would remove a wheel set from the loco and take it to my Local Hobby Shop and see if they have replacements. Or just take the loco to them, depending on your expertise in loco repair.
There are no direct substitutes for the Rivarossi C-420 wheels. They have a groove on the back that the electrical pick up sits in. There is a shop that does carry spare Riv. parts, but I don’t have the link.
You might look for half axles of the same wheel and axle diameters and then re-rig the electrical pickup. I will look through my spare parts, (I have at least one unassembled C-420 left and with Atlas version now available, I doubt I’ll ever put that one back together).
BTW, Rivarossi is not out of business, they just keep changing hands, but getting spare parts has always been problematic.
Try Golf Manor Hobbies in Cinncinati Ohio at www.GOLFMANORHOBBIES.com (when I order a couple of years ago they were’nt the most concietous for answering email although someone else who has dealt with the a bit more recently had better luck). Ph (513) 351-3849 3pm-9pm Est. They can be a bit pricey, but they are pretty good to deal with on the phone.
I believe NWSL makes replacement conversion wheelsets to fit the C420. However you would have to replace all of them since NWSL wheels are in accordance with NMRA standards and the wheels sets do not have the deep flanges as the Rivarossi wheels do. They were not listed at Walthers the last time I checked but they still listed in the NWSL catalog so you may have to order direct
NWSL does make replacements for the Lima/Rossi Alco. Since this was a later production, the original wheels are RP25 as well, but the replacements are available in different tread widths.
