I often see topics from all over the U.S. & Canada and their locations , it seems some states are never mentioned, does no one in Delaware enjoy the hobby? North Dakota?? West Virginia? How about Brazil? Italy? surely there must be a hobbyist in Yemen. or is this hobby really a North American specialty, sure there are Brits, Nederlanders, etc but not a lot of representantive members from different countries, or am I reading something into this that is not true?? and- - -and— Is there anyone in the U.S. who runs European trains exclusivley? (it’s winter here, I’m not too busy!)
So where do you live tatans?
I live directly above the center of the Earth.[^]
I live in NORTH DAKOTA!!!
The town I live in was founded by the Northern Pacific. The cities railroad heritage goes deep. Mainstreet is named for Henry Villard. It is a great place to live as a model railroader. Every house has a full basement and we have nice long winters in wich you can build to your hearts contenet. Not a lot of garden railroads up here, but plenty of HO and N action.
I was going to say we all live in basements, garages, and sheds but I see I read the title wrong. (I live in Texas, and it seems we a lot of modelers here)
My wife thinks model railroaders live on the planet Alturas–or beyond.
I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. The climate is beautiful and most people in this area are open-minded but housing is EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE. Unfortunately, basements are very rare in this area and extra space is very costly.
Michigan here!!! Its well…cold, but I do have a basement[:D]
There are model railroaders in all the 50 states and probably in every province (can’t be sure about NW Territories). But you’ll see many more California, New York, Illinois or Texas locations just because they have a lot more people.
Model Railroading is very big in Europe. Also popular in Australia/NZ and in Japan.
Keep in mind that for a hobby like model railroading to become popular in any country you need to have an economy that is well developed, with a decent standard of living, discretionary income and spare time. You won’t find many model railroaders in places like Somalia. Even in a country as large and developed as Mexico, model railroading or railfanning is a very small hobby. Most people here are still too busy making a living to have time and money to lavish on a hobby.
Most european or asian model railroaders are probably frequenting forums that: a) operate in their language and b) deal with their style of prototype equipment.
Just my thoughts,
Ed
Myself, the opposite: I’m european (french: you know, the country where we eat stinkin’ cheese[:D]), and I model american prototype. Furthermore in Z scale.[;)]
Dominique
I’m in Monterey and on30francisco is right, housing prices are somewhere in the neigborhood of the orbit of Pluto.

God Bless Oklahoma

If you would make a count here based on Hobby Shops, you would think there are only a few MRs in this state. However, when you attend local train shows you can see that this is not true. By no means are we as populated with modelers as the NE, but we do have our fair share with most being loners.
REX
I suspect most model railroaders live in houses. Haven’t seen many laouts under bridges[:o)] Although I do live in an RV.and have an On30 layout[:D]
er…Oh, you meant …like state,or country[:I]
I live in Minehad, Somerset,England.
At present I am armchair modelling exclusively. HO. Espee in the 50s. I have a loft space which I am considering converting into a layout area. But first I have to clear out all the extraneous N/HO/ collection and a whole mess of books and magazines. I feel an Ebay coming on. Minehead is home to the West Somerset Railway. The longest preserved line in England.Steam and all…
André Chapelon? Congratulations, I believe a pseudo made with the name of a french engineer is quite rare in Northern America!
All the beZt,
Dominique, Z-scaler and “stinkin’ cheese eater” from France…
Welcome to the forums tony2000 or at least to your first post. I reside in albany ga. No basements as they turn into swimming pools. We have no hobby shop but we do have a club, Flint River Model Railroad Club. There are more modelers in town than club members. We do sponser a show in Jan every year, next week in fact, which draws a good group. The town is serviced by NS and a short line. It was ga/fla railnet but I know they just sold out. Phil
I’m not sure what fell on central Indiana, but here I am.[8D]
Sunny FLorida Keys. Land of the Hurricane! I should have modeled boats rather than RR.

Northwest DC - fifteen minutes from Union Station and the only preserved Ps-4, #1401. Housing’s not as expensive as San Fran, but rising fast - got a nice old rowhouse a few years back, which takes a lot of work but has materially aided my model railroading. Home repair has lots of transferrable skills. And you can wire the basement circuits to suit your model railroading needs.
There are a lot of model railroaders here - quite a few clubs, the B&O Museum in Baltimore, and plenty of good sites to watch trains, particularly in Maryland.
