I buy most of my stuff through ebay. The rest of it comes from my favorite train shops and internet train stores once in a while.

I get all my motive power and rolling stock 2nd or 3rd hand just like most of the real life short lines did…I like to try to get old engines to run again and like to repaint and decal…Cox 47
I have actually baught them in all of the above. All of my cars have come from the hobby store so far.
I buy alot of stuff off of ebay, but i also buy from hobby shops,a nd the ocassional train shows!
Most comes from train shows, second is mail order. LHSs don’t carry much S.
Enjoy

I couldn’t vote! I get all locos via internet and rolling stock exclusively at the LHS.
The only LHS near us is a Ace hardware (they have a hobby place inside). They have a reasonable amount of N but the internet has proved to be cheaper most of the time. So I geuss in reality I can’c vote either [:P]
for those of you who buy your trains 2nd or 3rd hand, how can someone go about doing that if they do not live near a city with train shows? do y"all go to garage sales, estate sales, etc? is that a good way to find used items?
also, what advice can you give for how to find second hand track, and is that even a good idea? thanks.
hobby shop but ebay as well and on the odd occasion the train show
my LHS has secondhand engines for cheap and old engines still in their boxes for cheap- i’m gonna get a few Athearn b-b’s next time i go there. I like to support the LHS but i buy some stuff off the internet.
Locomotives - Most of them have been off the Internet
Rolling stock - All of them from my LHS. That way I can check the BLT dates to make sure that they fit in my era.

Hobby shop.
As we used to say, when I was skateboarding “Support those, who support your sport.”
We live southeast of Kansas City, MO. We found a great train store in Grandview. If you’re nearby, drop in and say hi to Charlie, Darren and George. And check out their testbed layout, complete with rollover traffic accident. Police, wreckers and ambulances!!
Used to buy only at LHS, but since they both closed, and the next one is over a hundard miles away, it’s has to be the internet. even from them.
at the hobbie shop…becouse model trains arent the only hobby i injoy, to keep the doors open on it so if i want or need something right now…i suport them… becouse it sucks when you want to work on something and you have to wait days or weeks for the parts or what not to show up in the mail…

Internet Hobby stores. Shop on line. Find what you like. Then order it.
Allan.
I have found my best deals at train shows, so i scarf them up when they’re in town…(I just bought 18 pieces of rolling stock last weekend at the World’s greatest hobby train show here in Houston )…the catch is that you need to test the locomotive before leaving the building and if this isn’t possible, get an address from the vendor so you have somewhere to return it if you’re not satisfied with the performance…chuck
I browse alot on the internet for prices, but since I live in colorado (caboose hobbies, nscalesupply etc.)I get most of them at a hobby shop[:)]
dekruif,What makes you think that Southern ran their engine back wards when there is a “F” on the end of the long frame…There is no wrong way to operate a engine including wide cabs as locomotives operate well in either direction.
