I put together a puzzle last year of a picture of an old 2-6-2 steam loco pulling a consist of old time passenger cars out of a depot in what appears to be the Rocky Mountains. The name of the community on the depot sign is Telluride. I’ve looked this up in the American Map Atlas, but didn’t find anything. My web searches have only gotten me things like Metro Ride and so forth.
Anyone out there know of a community up in the Rockies by the name of Telluride ?.
Telluride, named for large deposits of tellurium found there, a little west and a little south of Ouray Colorado, at the foot of Black Bear Pass made famous in a CW McCall song a couple years back.
It’s so deep in a valley that they only get sunlight from 10 am to 2 pm and not at all in winter.
Here’s a pic of the “road”:
and another:
Thos pines on the face are about a hundred feet tall.
Here’s a pic of one of Telluride’s up-valley suburbs from Black Bear Road:
Telluride sort of yupped out when the Hollywood crowd discovered the skiing there, but It’s still worth a visit, and Ouray and Silverton are pretty close by, as the eagle files anyway. Highway 550 south of Ouray is probably one of the snakiest paved roads in all of North America, built by the same guy who built the Rio Grande Southern and the Silverton RR. He tried several times to fund a railroad up that same gorge to “close the loop” formed by the RGS, SRR, and DRGW, but never could interest investors. He designed a cog railroad that would have gone at a 7 percent grade, and an electric one that kept the grade down to a six I think, but the project never got off the ground.
If you want real old time Colorado, without hardly any hype at all, cruise over Cinnamon or Engineer Pass to Lake City. They roll up the sidewalks at 9 pm sharp, but you can get a beer till midnight at a couple of places. You can stay for $15 a night at a little campground on the NW corner of town, in some real nice (but small) cabins if you have your own blankets or sleeping bags, showers $5 extra.
Telluride in southwestern Colorado is one of the most spectacular places in the Rocky Mountains…I was there last September on vacation just cruising around and it is one of the prettiest places i’ve ever been to…it’s also a really fun drive up and down the mountain in an RV…chuck
Comeon Tracklayer, your not that lazy that you can’t type Telluride on your Google search bar to find it are you??? Tsk tsk, that is pretty sad young man !!!
