Might be heading up there
Oh, there is lots to do around here. Just about everything from the east funnels thru the between Lake Michigan and Valparaiso. You have NS - ex Conrail mainline, CSX mainline, CN (ex GTW), NS mainline to Ft. Wayne, and the CFE. Add the South Shore and you have well over 200 trains in a 24 hour period of time.
CP 482 on the ex Conrail line is a popular spot and has considerable Amtrak plus big volumes of NS, CP, and CSX freights. Willowcreek at Portage is the CSX junction plus two daily CP intermodals. FtWayne Crossing just west of Valpo has the NS/CN/CFE crossing. If you are interested in South Shore, then you can go to Michigan City or pick a spot such as Ogden Dunes to watch both NS and South Shore.
Stay off of railroad property and you should be fine.
