Where is my auto carrier? Can anyone help me with its status?

Hi,

I ordered a new Ford from the Lousiville plant, and it was loaded on car carrier ATSF089118, and shipped out on 8/3. It went from CSX to the UP, and I heard from my dealer that on 8/9 it suffered “mechanical failure” at Armourdal, Kansas.

Can anyone find out if it is back in transit, and/or what kind of problems it incurred (hopefully not a wreck), and the projected date to arrive in the Houston area.

Thank you all so much, I really appreciate your help!

You posted this on several forums. You must really want that vehicle.

I’m a regular on the Model Railroader site, so I did post there. But, I suspect the folks that frequent this forum may be more able to help out.

The original source of my info is seriously busy this week, and frankly I’m surprised I got the info I posted.

Do you figure the vehicle will be worth the wait?

Mobileman44: Armordale,Ks. ( Armordale Yard (?)) is actually on the UPRR just west of KCKs, and slightly NE of the Argentine Yard. In the riverbottoms of the Kansas River.

It’s location is just Souh of the parallel I-70 and east of US-69. Here’s a link to a map of that area. @ http://wikimapia.org/#lang=en&lat=39.083572&lon=-94.635544&z=13&m=b&permpoly=7016926&show=/7016926/Armourdale

Send Union Pacific an inquiry. After all, in an indirect way, you are a Union Pacific customer. On second thought, you are the customer!

Now that is an interesting idea! I do believe I will attempt that and “google” the web and hopefully get UP’s customer service.

Of course I will let you know what happens!

WOW, I called UP customer service and the fellow was very cooperative. The auto carrier is on the repair track as of 3:30 this morning, and was not involved in any accident.

He added that UP values the auto carry business very highly, and will do their best to get the car back in service. He could not tell the exact problem, but indicated it was apparently something to do with the trucks.

Got to say, thanks for the idea, and thanks to UP for not brushing me off!

Flat wheel or a hot box are the most likely causes.

Mobileman44: You are welcome! Wow!..glad that worked.

If it is at Westfield it is here in Harris County at the UP auto lot in Spring.

Should make it to your dealer tomorrow or the day after.

What part of the Houston area are you in?

As you’ve learned, “mechanical failure” can be anything major or minor on the car; but that’s different from “derailment”, wreck, collision, etc.

Hi,

The message that indicated “westfield” was likely just the destination. If the car was in Kansas on the repair track at 3 am the night before, it could not have made it here the next day. I live about 12 miles northwest of the unloading facility at westfield, and have driven by it often.

Sometimes, there are more auto carrier cars there than one could imagine! Ha, I stopped there once to take pics (outside the fenceline) and I got more than my share of dirty looks.

Glad you got an update. I wonder what UP tells the customer if they’re the other load in this situation: http://cs.trains.com/trn/f/111/t/249438.aspx

It’s fixed!
