The Royal Gorge is located not far from where I live. It’s in Canon City, CO. Across the top of the gorge is the worlds highest suspension bridge. It’s a tourist attraction, and I’ve walked over the bridge and looked down on the area in your photo many times. From the bridge there is an incline elevator which goes down to the canyon floor (where the railroad is). The tracks you show are still used today by a toursit train, the Royal Gorge Route Railroad which uses F7s for a two hour scenic ride. http://www.royalgorgeroute.com/
That’s some beautiful scenery. And for 95 bucks, you can get a cab ride in the loco.
Sounds like something I would like to do, if I ever get to Colorado. Dave
Sorry, electrolove, I don’t have a photo… the one you posted is quite representative. And Dave, all I can say is “me too.” That $95 loco ride is on my list of things to do… if I could just drive 30 minutes up the road, and do it. How dumb is that?
I found some photos at royalgourgeroute.com, this is two of them, and they are really really awesome!!! If you are sitting on a slow connection, don’t click the links [:D]
I live in Colorado Springs and have been meaning to get my behind down there to check it out. Looks like a great trip. Me and the wife just went to Seven Falls and climbed those stairs, so an elevator to the bottom sounds great.
i used to be stationed at ft carson in the late 80’s and early 90’s and have been to the royal gorge 2 times and 1 time i saw a train from the suspension bridge looked like a live smoking n scale layout, also have been to seven falls, cave of the winds garden of the gods and of course to the top of pikes peak always drove though
Well, thanks to electrolove bringing this up… I got the bug… I was too cheap to go for the cab ride, but my wife and I have reservations for a coach ride this weekend. I’ll post photos! Can’t wait. (Don’t you love the forum… it took prompting all the way from Sweden to get me to drive 40 miles down the road and ride the darn train!) [:D]
