Portland, Or. 1995

Looks like 844 coming to Arkansas!! OH BOY!

Runs to get camcorder and tapes!

Woo hooo!! It’s coming to Kansas City, too!! Gonna be there!

They do keep both the Challenger along with the 844 (and her sister 838) here in Cheyenne. I am in the military, stationed in Cheyenne, and I have been fortunate enough to befriend the UP Steam Crew that operates them. They have even let me come with them on a few break-in-runs with both engines. They are housed and maintained out of the last remnants of UP’s once mighty Cheyenne steam shops and roundhouse.

As for the status of the 3985, here is a photo I took just a week ago. Unfortunately she is currently a 4-2-4-4 as three of her driving wheel-sets have been removed and shipped off to be re-surfaced. Once they get back, they will take off the other three and have them sent out as well. They aren’t expecting to have her back in action again for at least a year, possibly two. She last ran for the Frontier days Excursion in July of '05. However, the 844 is alive and well, I got to go along for a ride last month for a break-in-run down to Denver and back. What an incredible experience! They will be taking her down to Texas this Thursday.

Here are a few photos of the 3985 and 844 i’ve taken.

Wow…

I feel green (jealous)

AMn, only 45min drive to Limon CO, but i have SCHOOL! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO that would be so SWEET to see!

Well, tried to run…The photo below is how the rear driving wheels looked at Union Station in Denver the day before. She still broke down again somewhere north of Greeley. I did not chase it that far. I turned back in Fort Morgan.

Yeah, that was definately a bad day, they had to replace her with the 6936. I still have yet to see them doublehead (I was at work when they left Cheyenne) I missed the 844 leaving today because of work also.

That is one beautiful locomotive there!! I like it alot

Great locomotives (3985 and 844) and great pictures everyone!
