Finding 2" and 4" thick extruded polystyrene has proven more difficult than I thought. Home Depot and Lowes only have 1/2 inch and 1 inch thicknesses. They have suggested I go to other building supply companies and I have, but with no luck. I’ve talked with the Styrofoam folks directly but they don’t have any distributors near my home (beyond what HD and Lowes carry).
Laminate the thinner stuff, regular yellow wood glue works well, spread it very thin, and leave the assembly weighted or clamped for at least a couple of weeks.
Hmm…funny our Home Depot has 2", 4" and 6" thick extruded foam (it’s blue), Lowes doesn’t seem to have anything thicker than 1/2" though. you might be talking to the wrong moron at Home Depot, try talking to a higher level moron, they may know where it is exactly in the store.
Of course this could all be mute, as your local store may not carry more than a 1/2" due to location (warm climayes tend not to have thicker foam). if this is the case, just get the thickest you can in multiple sheets and polybind them together to make the desired thickness. in truth, polybinding them will actually make them stronger than the same single ply verson would be.
What your local Home Depot carries in the way of foam insulation material depends on the climate and what contractors in your area use. They are not going to carry something that doesn’t sell locally.
Here in Arizona, one inch thick foam sheets are the only ones used on houses. If you can locate a roofing contractor who does commercial construction, you may be able to get up to 4" thick yellow foam sheets that are used in the roofs of shopping malls, etc.
Has anyone had sucess having a Northern HD ship this stuff to a Souther HD? Any guess what it might cost if a Northern friend was willing to pick some up and ship it to me?
If you would take a whole pallet load, and other HD stores have it, you can probably get your local store to special order it - which would be your most economical route.
I realize it’s the opposite end of the Country from you - but I used to get my extruded plastic in the 1980’s from Cadillac Plastics in North Hollywood, CA, when I lived nearby. I needed material that Evergreen didn’t make - and just checked the phone directory. If they’re still there they would no doubt ship out of state. But I would think that you’d be able to find a plastics warehouse in the Southeast somewhere.
