hi all
i have a perfect track layout design in the shape of an L one problem i dont know where to start should i do the track first or the geography ??
please help
I’d start with the track exactly as it would appear with terrain and I’d use some sort of snap track. this would be to test the layout to make sure you’ve got a perfct fit for what you want, it also makes sure those loco’s can get up any grades you’ve decided on as well as able to navigate all the various curves and turnouts. once your sure the layout is indeed perfect by actually testing, then i’d start on the terrain, gradually replacing the snap track with flex track.
I agree with NTDN. Get your track work and wiring in place and operating perfectly. Your sequence should be benchwork, trackwork, wiring, scenery. If your layout is a large one (I’m talking garage size and up) you can do these by section so that you don’t get bored or broke before the trains are running.

Yes, definitely go with the track layout first. Get a good wiring book to. I’ve done a few layouts early on where my switches didn’t work because of the way I had them set up and I’ve shorted things out. Try to go with a tried and true track setup scenario. You’ll have a lot more fun after getting thru that setup phase, then let your layout fall into place and you can run a few trains while modeling.
