Where?

Where is the coming events section?

One of the only reasons I subscribe is for the coming events section,

toss it in the bag, and as I travel check for and the attend the events.

was this column a free service?

Did the bottom line really kill the best reason to subscribe?

I think MR announced a couple of issues ago that they were dropping this from the magazine to make room for more “news” (read: Paid Advertising).

They actually didn’t totally drop the coming events … they moved it to the internet.

I have mixed feelings about this change, since I don’t think we’ve yet reached the stage that most modelers are online.

If this was such a great idea (read: the notices would reach the widest possible audience, which I thought was the idea), then I wonder how many advertisers would want to have their ads move out of the magazine to internet only? NOT!

My best guess is about half the modelers are online. By moving to internet, they’ve just cut the audience in half … which is a bad idea, by my way of thinking.

Hope they read this. I hadn’t renewed mu subscription and now that I have seen this I probably won’t. Hope they didn’t do this in their other modeling magazines.

They decided that they don’t really want to help promote the hobby by bringing in new people via local events, unless they are online. Many, aren’t.

BIG MISTAKE. MANY are PO’ed about this. A great dis-service to the hobby and subscribers, IMO.

For Shame Kalmbach! [:O][censored][:(!] [D)][sigh][:(][tdn][xx(]

I also, shall fail to renew.

Perhaps the bottom line will not miss my subscription,

but I will not miss the misers.

(sarcasticly) Maybe they stopped putting it in because doing that half page was WAY too expensive. I bet they were losing at least 50 cents a decade printing that in the magazine.[:)] But they’ll probably lose at least $1,000 or more a year from people not subscribing anymore.[D)][:o)][8][alien][dinner][:-^][zzz][{(-_-)}][xx(]

I was under the impression that the mag served all the customers,

I don’t buy MR every month for that very reason, I leaf through it at the grocery store. There are tons of people in the hobby that don’t have Internet service but MR decided to screw it up anyways. My local club used their service for 16 years to advertise our show. Hell we would pay to advertise our show in MR. I’ve discovered that MRC is a better magazine for me anyways and it advertises all the shows. MR missed the boat on this big time.

If this was such a great idea (read: the notices would reach the widest possible audience, which I thought was the idea), then I wonder how many advertisers would want to have their ads move out of the magazine to internet only? NOT!
Better watch that Joe,or soon we’ll have a commercial in between each post.

I too miss the events listing, I am going to rely on Classic toy trains for that info now!

Yup MR blows it again!! I suspect Terry (or whoever) thinks everybody has a computer or can zip down to their local library to use one…
MR time for a reality check…Not every modeler has a computer or access to one as you think so you dropped a valuable section…
What’s that? You’re kidding! You support WGH campaign and pull a stupid stunt like this? Some day MR just might use their heads before doing something stupid again…[V][:(]

It may have been nice if they did a survey to find out how many of us rely on that informationbefore they did away with it.I’ll just have to rely on other publications to get the info. I won’t drop the subcribtion however, They produce a good magazine & they know it. Maybe that’s the problem. Easter

Unfortunately as the circulation decreases, ad revenues decrease, pages decrease and they have to make hard choices about what to keep and what to drop. I don’t know whether this was a good idea or not since the folks most affected are the ones not here (Anyone know what % of MR readers have no online access?). I was already using their online listing instead, so for me no big deal.

One of the interesting changes that came in with the Internet was the decline of the large multipage ads in MR from AHC and others listing hundreds of products - now they list one or two and their web site. This is at least an indication that most of their customers have web access.

Also, most things like train shows, etc. advertise in the local newspapers so the information is out there for non computer users.

Bottom line, I think that a lot of us don’t like change. I know I miss some of the columns they have dropped over the years. But even more I miss some of the magazines that went under.

Enjoy

MR rolled snake eyes on that one.Terry Thompson and his crew better do a brain check because he’s put nothing on the table since taking over,my subscription will soon too lapse…

I’m not going to cancel my subscription–there’s always SOMETHING I can use in the issues of MR, but I do hope that Terry and the staff will re-consider their decision. My two LHS will advertise local events, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that out-of-town events within driving distance will be included. By this decision, they’ve put a lot of us model railroaders who DON’T have PC’s in the position where we’re going to miss out on a lot of constructive ideas to enhance our layouts.
Hope someone on the MR staff reads these threads and lets Terry know.

I didn’t even have internet access untill october 2004 and I used to go to the library to get books and use the internet but I wouldn’t make a special trip just to look up events. The library is 20 minutes away and MRR is 20 feet away at the mailbox…come on MRR.
