I glad to see that I am not alone in having UP as my favourite Class 1. Though I always liked the Chessie System if for nothing else but their orange, yellow, and blue paint.
See Jim,
If you want to know something about numbers, ask a engineer!
This is not a slam, but I bet mudchicken still has his slide rule, and still knows how to use it.
Remember, we went to the moon in machines designed with pencil, paper and slide rules!
And yeah, got my SCUBA ready, just in case.
Stay Frosty,
Ed
Well, I have a bad attitude now so here it goes. You ask which class 1 RR is your favorite. Yeah I used to work for the UP but I would give anything to work for the SP. The UP treats their people like garbage. I busted my balls to make them happy but all they wanted was more. So i guess i don’t have a favorite [B)][8][}:)]
Hey Marty, I am going to be an engineer when I grow up and I wanted to work for the UP but after what you said I ask you, should I work for the UP then? [:(][:(][:(]
Ed:
I know how to use a slide rule, but have not touched one since the seventies. Give me an HP-41CX or HP-48GX (neither made anymore either) and I’m dangerous. Somebody has to do the steering out on the railroad. Never was in to pocket protectors, but always have to have pen & pencil at the ready. It doesn’t hurt that I teach other surveyors/engineers what the classification systems are either. Most surveyors/engineers can “highway”, but are clueless when it comes to railroading.
(and I already figured out that Mookie let the cat out of the bag regarding why I remain nameless and faceless to the profile)
David3: A civil engineer is a hogger/ throttle-jockey out of a job. Want to talk to a real engineer? … Talk to a roadmaster or a division engineer and then concentrate on your school work.
Class 1 Favorite was BNSF, now leaning toward UP after some of the dumb moves generated by BNSF upper management combined with their inability to listen to the warnings from their middle managers.
As being in BNSF country pretty much and only living right across the street from there tracks. I guess that makes me a BNSF fan. Plus i love the H2 scheme on there locomotives.
David3, Amtrak’s punctuality issues stem from the fact that the Federal law mandating that Amtrak be given priority over frieght is seldom enforced. Plus, The frieght RR’s are the landlords, and Amtrak the “tenant,” as it were. if Amtrak had the $$$, it could increase the rent payments and punctuality incentives, to the frieght/landlord RR’s and this would alleviate the tardiness issues to a certain extent. Right now, the general public has something of a negative view of ALL RR’s in part because their only contact with RR’s is frequently Amtrak. “They don’t know how to operate on time,” - this isn’t Amtraks fault, in fact, it is beyond Amtrak’s control. If Amtrak fails to operate on time, it may be due to the fact that Freight RR’s in general are running into physical plant and capacity limitations. IOW, Amtrak’s problems with tardiness stem from the frieght RR’s repeated failure to get all trains over the road in a timely, punctual fashion.
To keep this post on topic, my favorite RR has always been the CNW. Second: KCS. The only other RR that had as much to do with WI RR history would be the late MILW.
Norfolk Southern
Mine is the one at the park, no RFEs, TMs, Sup’s, or any other officials laying in the weeds trying to fire me. No signal sheets either.
Ken
Amen!
Well i gotta go with Norfolk Southern. Most likely cause i loved the N&W.
My favourite Class 1 would be the mightly Union Pacific. I like the UP because of its colour scheme, and with the new old scheme brought back a few years ago. I think the wings on the front of the locomotive look really sharp. Also I think it is one of the best run class 1 railroads out there.
Absolutely right I love the way they run the UP!!! [:D][:D][:D] [^] David
My favorite is the UP. They are the biggest railroad in the country. I have seen too many trains on their tracks to say that another railroad is better. Another reason is because they swallowed up the C&NW.
Yeah, you’re right they are the biggest railroad in the country, no wonder they have so much traffic, the only parts of the country they’re missing are, Alaska, the northeast and Hawaii, which is impossible to get out there. [^] David
How about the “Drinkem, Dine em, Dickem, & Dunkem” ? Teddy Kennedy’s railroad…The Chappaquidic route?
UNION PACIFIC
Canadian Pacific Railway
Union Pacific Railway
I like CP UP the most then BNSF and CSX
bnsf is most efficient when it comes to intermodial. that is where the growth is and money. after living by chicago on main line of atsf and seeing how well the trains are run bnsf is hard to catch if any one can. willow springs ill has largest ups logistics center in world. ships more than 1000 trailers a day. each way .west east.something to see.bnsf smokes.
