It is different for different decoders. Look in the manual for the decoder and there should be a listing of all the CVs and their functions.
On-line, if necessary. Go to the manufacturer’s website and look under “Manuals” or “Technical Information.” On one page there’ll be a handy-dandy table with a list of all CVs.
On my MRC 1627 Steam sound decoder, the sound volume is CV 52. According to the included instructions, it can be set to 0 or 31. I don’t have it installed currently, so I don’t know if it can be set to anything in between. Choosing a setting between 0 and 31 may or may not work. If you try it, let us know how well it worked.
On my MRC 1637 Steam sound decoder, sound volume is CV 52. On my Soundtraxx DSD-100LC there are several CVs for sound. CV121 is bell volume. CV120 is whistle/Horn volume. CV123 is dynamic break volume. CV122 is diesel exhaust volume. My BLI heavy Mike has a sound volume adjustment ‘screw’ under the water tank cover on the tender. This adjusts all of the sounds up or down together. most of the individual sounds, exhaust, bell, whistle coupler clank etc., can be individually adjusted as well.

Alan, into which loco did you install your 100LC? Mine is in a Heritage 0-6-0 and works well. Unfortunately, it sounds a bit ‘thin’ or tinny.

I have the MRC Steam decoder in my P2K 2-8-8-2. The CV for the main volume is 52. There are only two options for it though 0 or 31. I tried setting mine in between and it does not take. If you set it at 0 the volume decreases to about 50 % or max.
