Though I own both large and small steam locos, I find that I prefer the smaller ones the most. I guess because just about every train book I have shows smaller locos like Pacifics, Mikados and Consolidations doing most of the pulling.

I prefer the size loco that’s right for the job.
Depends. Are you asking about models or the prototype?
Mark.
Exactly!
On my layout,in order not to have a “over crowded” look,I tend to run smaller motive power.Although my layout is around the wall in a 20 x 20 room the larger engines and/or trains seem to eat up space more quickly.
I prefer larger steam–I run (or will be once the track is finished) an Athern Genesis Challenger. Just love to see all those moving parts go. Put alot of time into designing a layout with minimum 22" radius curves to accomodate this engine.
Both equally. As has been said - what’s right for the job. I take equal pleasure in a Pennsy T-1 hauling the BWay Limited, or a shay pulling log cars, or a little 0-6-0 working the yard…
I didn’t vote because i don’t prefer steam locomotives at all!..chuck
You didn’t include other for spacemouse.
I prefer smaller, just because.
Enjoy
Paul
Smaller.
We really need a good, modern looking, 2-6-0 and 4-6-0. Locos with piston valves, not slide valves like the Bachmann 4-6-0, plain dome and sandbox, not the wedding cake ones on the Bachmann 4-6-0, steel cabs and highsided tenders and modern appliances.
I would have voted BOTH.
I love BIG steam; Mallets, Garratts, 2-10-4s that were built for power, not just to spread the weight of a Berkshire over more axles, 4-8-4’s that generated 6000 drawbar horses at 90 MPH…
My prototype considered 2-8-2’s to be big power, and also ran 2-6-2’s, 2-6-0’s and big-boilered 2-8-0s with all the beauty of a pit bull. In 1964, 20 4-wheel cars was a normal-length freight. I own 'em, so I must love 'em, right?
My freelance line owns a 2-6-6-2T more powerful than anything ever operated in Japan. (I can’t justify a Y-6 on a route laid out using a pretzel for a straightedge where the heaviest train is only about 500 tons.) More usual power is an ancient 0-8-0 with rollerskate-wheel drivers - my very favorite loco!
So - BOTH.
2-6-0s, 4-6-0s, 2-8-0s, logging locos, yummy!!![dinner]
I’m only modeling 1917 an 1885 so you can’t get much smaller and I voted that way. But there is something to be said for the Challengers and Big Boys.
I don’t know how to vote on that.
There’s nothing as impressive as a large steam hauling a long train down the line. But my smaller steam (0-4-0T and 0-8-0) will do most of my “interactive” work with of breaking down trains and running small runs cars to inter city industries. (Or at least it’s planned that way)
I LOVE big steam locomotives!
I like the look of the large steam engines, but my railroad is too small to run them. (that’s if I could afford to by one!)
That depends on how you interpret your question… I like Small Engines but in Large Scale, I dont care for those other ‘smaller’ scale loco’s no matter how ‘big’ the engine is. So, Yes… I like Big Little Engines but dislike Small Large Engines, understand? [:D]

SP 2-6-0, SP 2-8-0. Are you listening Broadway Limited?
