I picked up some Kadee six wheel standard passenger trucks (#1018) in N scale. Yes, KADEE - so they go back to before the Kadee - MT split. They are in the carded display packs, unopened.
For a particular project, I would like to glue the coupler box to the truck frame instead of using the little screw provided. I think the material used to make the truck is some sort of black nylon (?) or plastic (?).
Can anyone suggest an effective glue for this purpose? By brand name, please!
ALSO, I would like to kit bash a couple of old Atlas N scale heavyweight combines into a short coach and a full length double door baggage (no particular prototype). I thought I would glue the roof/window glazing to the car ends to weld the car together permanently. Just apply glue to the appropriate surfaces, slide the roof and two car ends together, put a couple of rubber bands in place until glue dries. Any glue suggestions?
It’s called Delrin plastic, or slick engineering plastic. No commonly available glue will stick to it.
Micro-Mark sells a glue that is allegedly made specifically for Delrin plastic, called Dr. Mike’s Formula 2 Glue, priced at $12.15 per 1/2 oz plus $8.95 shipping.
Walther’s GOO would probly be your best bet ,though I strongly suggest the use of the screw for a fail safe connection.
As for the second project I’m not quite sure of what you plan to do.If your altering the length of the car you will be changing the length of the roof too.I would suggest that you shorten or lengthen the car body the do the same to the roof but leave the two parts as seperate pieces incase there is a future need to get inside the car.
The glue I would reccomend for this project is Model Master Liquid in the black bottle.
One more tip, since you will be altering both roof and body be sure the joint of both pieces DO NOT line up .In other words stagger the joints.
Using the screw as well as glue will give some protection from the glue joint failing; the screw will take most of the shock loads of coupling, uncoupling, fast starts/stops, etc
I used glue once; the key word being “once”. When the coupler failed, yes, sometimes Kadees DO fail, I had to tear it apart getting the old draft gear off. It only takes a couple of minutes to drill, tap and screw a draft gear box to the car.
