Which would be better?

I have a 4x8 layout, I was the person who said they were switching to N scale. I was wondering which one would be better for that size of layout?

FYI: Noticed your other post entitled “Sorry double post”. You can delete any extraneous posts by opening them back up and clicking on the “Delete” button up in the right hand corner.

That really depends on a lot of factors.

Are your hands and eyes capable of handeling N scale, or do you need HO.

Do you intend to run long trains or short ones. N would be better suited to that size table if long trains are desired.

On board sound technology is much further along for HO scale, though N has a few products and it’s getting more all the time.

The selection of equipment and buildings isn’t as wide in N scale as it is in HO. There’s a lot to pick from, but there are some holes. Are you willing to do some kitbashing and scratchbuilding if you want that special loco or car? For example, there’s no N scale camelback loco’s available. If you want one you’re going to have to build it. Want a Climax loco? Get out your scratchbuilding tools. It can be done though. I’ve already built an N scale 4-4-0 camelback and I’m working on a Climax type A.

What scenery are you wanting? Mountains on a 4x8 in HO would be difficult to make believable, but in N, no problem. Do you want a big yard scene? N’s got you there. HO will again be very difficult, if at all possible, to make it work. Even in N it won’t be a huge yard, but you could give the impression of a substancial yard. A city scene you say? N scale buildings take up a smaller footprint then HO, so you could have more of them and give the impression of a larger city. HO though has the advantage when it comes to giving the felling of “heft”. Running in the country? N scale will give you more distance between your towns.

Also, keep in mind curve radii. An 18 inch curve in HO is kind of tight, but it’s quite generous in N. It allows you to run bigger loco’s on the same radii in N. Just try running a Big Boy on an 18 inch curve in HO. You might make it around the curve (you might not), but it won’t be pretty doing it. In N it still won’t be a thing of beauty, but it will be

Good response, Phil. I think you about nailed it. There is really no one “right” answer.

Given unlimited space, I’d rather be in HO. Main factors would be variety and selection of rolling stock, easier to work with, and more relaible operation of steam locomotives (which is important to me).

However, big however, I’m space restrained. And so I’m happily modeling along in N scale. I have a 3’ x 6’-8" hollow core wood door based layout. Slightly less space than you have with your 4x8. I suppose I could have done something in HO in this space, but it wouldn’t have what I really wanted.

There will be compromises no matter which way you go. It’s just a question of figuring out which advantages of each scale are more important to you. And you can have a satisfying model railroad whichever way you go.

Enjoy,
