While we're complaining - posting that take you to far back

Like many, I’m lazy and I like to stay where I am. When I reply to a post, I want to remain in the room I am in. So if I reply to a thread in general discussion, I want to return to the general discussion room. To often after replying to a post, I am taken out of the general discussion room, out of the model railroad forum, and into the page which shows all the forums. What’s up with that?

Over the summer my mother died and I was away from all RRing forums and didn’t become active until a couple of weeks ago. When I left, this wasn’t a probelm; when I came back it was. Is this a new policy? If so, it leaves something to be desired. If not, this glidge is irritating.

I did’nt know we were complaining [:D] ( I don’t read all the messages ) but I have noticed the same thing… Bet the regulars will tell us how to get around it… While on the subject of the format, I would like to return to some messages at a later date… If there were numbers on each message as at other forums, then you could just search by number…
Sometimes the subject gets kind of lost, but there is a responce I would maybe want to revisit… I realize we can print it, but I like to try and save paper like the government [:D][:D]

Steve and Rick,

What I do is open each topic in a new window. When I am finished reading and/or replying, I simply close the window and I back to where I started. After I reply to a topic (such as this one) it takes me back to the first page in this window. Then I close it and am back at my starting point.

If you wi***o keep track of a topic, you could always subscribe to that topic. Then, when a new entry is posted, you can be notified via e-mail. Your profile also shows which topics you are subscribed to so you can keep track of particular threads that way.

Others may have other methods.

Good suggestion Tom. On the other hand, it wouldn’t be an issue if the hosts for this list were a little faster. But that’s okay.

And Tom, am I correct in assuming you are a fan of Indiana University? That’s the only Big Red I know. [^]

There have been several threads concerning the speed of our gracious hosts servers but I can’t complain.

Actually, we should be little red this year. Tomorrow will determine wheter we keep intact two of the longest running records in college football - 35 consecutive bowl games and 42 non-losing seasons (we finished 7-7 in 2002). I will be keeping my fingers crossed!

Tom

yea, the servers are a little slow. But if MR spent money on servers they couldnt make such a great magazine![:D]

I’ve had the same problem with the system going all the way back to the “Magazines” page when I click on the “Back” icon. This appears to be a software glitch on the server. Sometimes it a little annoying, but nothing that can’t be overcome with two more mouse clicks to return to the forum. I have digital cable, so luckily I don’t have long waits for screens to pop up. If I was on dial-up and this kept happening, I would probably have abandoned this site a long time ago.

The best thing about it going back to the “Pick Forums” page? When I select the MR forum again, I get to see the really annoying pop up again!!! Woo Hoo!!
One a day? Yeah, right!!

Try switching to Netscape or Firefox. Both have a pop-up blocker. You can also download a toolbar from Google that will block them.

fiatfan: We have lost a lot of tradition in the last two years haven’t we? And today (26Nov04) we lost two more. I was a freshman in high school our last losing season. The new coach knows nothing of our traditions and rich history only his pro football plan of attack. How sad for us all. I have never had too many problems going back and forth from one forum to another. I read one topic and all responses and go Back to top, click on the open folder and start over from there. Hope this helps someone.

CK,

How right you are! If S.P. continues to run things, we end the last string also. We must be very close to the same age since I was also a freshman in high school.

Take care.

Fiatfan,
I have Netscape plus Norton Internet Security already. But my kids and I use this same machine on a couple game sites that won’t work with pop ups blocked. I don’t surf the net that much, there are probably only a dozen sites that I use on a regular basis, and I avoid sites (like Tripod sites) that use a lot of them.
My gripe is they are supposed to come up once per day. Period. But if I visit this site 6 times a day, I get pop ups every time. I don’t have to log in, it picks up the cookie that it is indeed me coming back, so if what MR says is true I should only see them once a day. And now there are THREE that come up, one of which is one of the stinkin’ weasely ones that hides itself so it’s there when you close everything else. I already subscribe to MR. And if I wanted to buy one of their books I would, I don’t need it shoved down my throat numerous times daily!! Bergie is supposedly checking this out, I think it’s time he finds the big K a new net guru.

Areibel,

If you go to Edit | Preferences | Privacy and Security there is a section for Popup Windows. It allows you to specify which sites should be allowed popups. You can add your game sites to the list and block all others.

I agree the popups should only be occurring infrequently. There was another thread about this earlier this week. Erik Bergstrom posted in that thread that he would look into the situation. Here is the link to that thread.

So, let me see if I have this straight, you are having navigational problems here on the site.

Here’s a tip, if you post to a topic, you can no longer use your browser’s back button to get out of the topic. If you only read the topic, then the back button will return you to the forum where the topic is located. If you post to the topic you will have to select where you want to go, by using the folder levels at the top of the page.

Personally, I don’t go into the individual forums anymore. I use the “active topics” button at the top of the page.

Like anything it has advantages and disadvantages. The disadvantage is it will show you all of the forums with active topics.

One advantage is, you can set the time frame for however far back you want to look. Another advantage is that sometime last spring, something got messed up on the MR forum, and the topics visited were no longer highlighted. The active topics highlighting still works.

The active topics option also has no limit as to how many topics can be displayed on a page. If there is a post to a topic within the time frame you have selected, it will pop up.

Under the login header , the path to get where you are is shown… After you post the message, click on "General Discussion ( Model Railroader ) real quick and it will take you back to the forum anyway
