I am still building my train. I need to learn the whistles, so I can “talk” to everyone. I am sure y’all can give me the basics that are used everyday.

I looked through the rulebook, and nowhere do I find any provision for the “wolf whistle” that would no doubt be called for when you’re by the tracks!
Here’s what I did find (these are, I’m sure, the rules currently in use by UP and BNSF, so that ought to take care of you):
I’ll use “–” for a long sound, and “o” for a short one.

(a succession of short sounds)
Use when an emergency exists, or persons or livestock are on the track. -
–
When stopped: air brakes are applied, pressure equalized. -
Release brakes. Proceed.

Acknowledgement of any signal not otherwise provided for. -
o o o
When stopped, back up. Acknowledgement of hand signal to back up. -
o o o o
Request for signal to be given, or repeated if not understood. -
– o o o
Flagman protect rear of train. -
o o o –
Flagman protect front of train. -
Flagman may return from west or south.
Flagman may return from east or north.
-
– – o –
Approaching public crossings at grade with engine in front.
(begin at least 1/4 mile from crossing, prolong or repeat until crossing is reached)
Also to be used when approaching men or equipment on or near the track,
and when view is obstructed. -

Inspect brake system for leaks or sticking brakes.
Jen, you’ll probably hear little of any of these, except for #11, since there are more effective ways of communicating them now (radio, mostly). #1 an #11 cannot be replaced with other communications.

The Canadian rule book has a few more:
14(a) o when standing, braking system is equalized; angle **** may be closed.
14(e) ooo ooo to notify track forces of fire on or near the right of way (to be repeated as often as required)
14(m) - (i) one mile from every flag stop indicated for their trains (except…)
(ii) when a train or engine stops and a crew member is required, under Rule 41 paragraph (b) or Rule 101.2 to replace torpedos exploded.
I expect a lot of whistle signals are now meaningless because there are no flagmen or crew to be talked to.
There are also some Snow Plow Whistle Signals
o stop at once
o-o move backward
-o- move forward.
