Whistle Sound for Old (Gilbert) American Flyer (AF) S Gauge Steam Locomotives (True Blast II)

This post is continuation of earlier post under the title “The Cheapest/Simplest Solution for a Modern /Whistle in Old AF (American Flyer) Tender”. In the previous post, the problem of limited space in an AF S gauge tender for a sound system was described. AF s gauge Steam locomotive models with only the e-unit in the tender have the space for a small circuit board and speaker. The Williams True Blast II system seems to work, but the supply of these units are unknown. So my request is as follows:

  1. Does anyone know possible suppliers of the Williams True Blast II units?

  2. Does anyone have an extra True Blast II Whistle unit for sale?

  3. Has anyone constructed a small whistle sound unit activated by a Lionel type whistle controller?

I apologize for starting a new thread, but I am trying to reach as many members as possilbe. Thank you for your patience and help.

An option might be to use a loco with the reverse unit on the AF loco. Many of the later, (21000 series) had the reversing unit mounted on the motor and the tender is empty except for a weight. Apersonal favorite is the 21085. Pull more tires two step reverse, smoke and chugger, great fairly inexpensive engine. The ones from 59 to 62 are best in my opinion. Some early locos without smoke units had a reverse unit in the loco also, like the 350.

Hello Sturgeon-Phish,

Thanks for the information on the e-unit location on Flyer Locomotives. I checked my latest flyer guide. The 21129 and 21115 are quite a bit more expensive than the 326 and 316. You’r is still inexpensive at $100.

Here is a pic of a 21085, ~ $105.
