White side walls

Did Southern’s steam locos all have white sides on their drive wheels? I’ve never seen a proto type, only some not-so-great black and white photos.

Rotor

A restored CPR Hudson was re-painted in Southern lettering to be used in the movie “Coal Miner’s Daughter” about Loretta Lynn. I think it was about 1978-79 IIRC??

Thanks fellas for the links!

Crandell;

The SRR leased one of CPR’s Royal Hudson for use in its excursion program in the late 1970’s. It was lettered “Southern” but was left in the CPR colors.

The picture of the “spoiler” is of Ps-4 1380, a 4-6-2. It was the only Ps-4 ever streamlined and was used from Washington and Monroe, VA on the Tennesean, where the loco pulled the train to the N&W interchange where it was handed over to a J or a streamlined Mountain. N&W handled it to Bristol, TN, where it was turned back over to the Southern.

IIRC, Otto Kuelher (sp?) designed the shroud.

Oh, and Jacon;

In looking thru Richard Prince’s book on Southern locomotives, it appears that only the engines used in regular passenger service had their tires painted white.
